So this game got translated this month. Some claim it's one of the best survival horror games ever and arguably the best Japanese PS2 game to never get translated.
I got it patched and it's working fine but it seems like the translation flew under the radar. Not even up on Repo after a month.

Anyone played it? It looks dope

>So this game got translated this month. Some claim it's one of the best survival horror games ever and arguably the best Japanese PS2 game to never get translated.
Why would it be? It was more pressing that Americans play THQ licensed cartoon slop instead.
>>
>>12549741
Neat, thanks for the heads up. Link to translation?
>>
>>12549741
Ayy, I remember being interested in this years ago but got filtered because I'm too lazy to learn noodle runes. I should give it a try if it works, looked sick.
>>
Whoa, this actually translates? The old boobtuber video essays must have pushed someone to go all the way. I'm interested to try it out.

Forgive me for asking but now that cdromance is kind of shite is there a decent easy place for prepatched iso's/bins?
>>
>>12549752
Link is here free on their patreon. That must be why it's so unknown, it's not even on Romhacking site

>>
>>12549762
You have to go to their sister site Repo. I feel comfortable linking this stuff here since /vr/ is dead as fuck but don't go spreading it around. That's exactly why they had to start using their sister site in the first place. Too many normies caught wind of it and they don't seem to understand the concept of law enforcement being able to enforce things online for some reason so they never shut the fuck up about how great it is to steal.
>>
>>12549763
Do romhacking sites accept patches that are 1 GB though...
>>
>>12549741
There was a group working on this for years, is this a different group? Never heard of "Cash"
>>12549763
>This is where Cash/wtfyd came along with his approach: using Google Translation API and some image editing, he was done translating the game in record time. Even if it's a rough translation, the game itself didn't showed any serious issues and I was able to finish it with multiple routes.
>>
>>12549776
Idk, I almost never download patches directly. That's probably what it is.
>>
>>12549776
I've seen patches >1GB on RHDN, but they're external links to mega or Google drive

Is it at least AI powered these days? The old model for Google Translate was always horrible.
>>
>>12549780
Ooo, well that would certainly turn some people off but I already read poorly translated classic lit and enjoy trying to retranslate/recontextualize sentences so machine translated is fine by me as long as it's been given at least a quick once over for readability.

It's kind of amazing that some indian has the know-how to crack a PS2 game and patch it but can't just give the script to someone for them to make a competent translation.

Like, it's not like this is a visual novel with 50 thousand lines. How much is there to translate? Like 1000-2000 lines? You could do it in a week.
>>
>>12550129
I think it actually might have a lot of text. I looked at the fan translation twitter account and apparently examination text changes depending on the player state, the object state, and whether or not you have some specific item. That kind of shit is what makes translating games more annoying than other stuff.
>>
>>12550000
Jesus christ that's bad. What the fuck

>>
>>12550000
Oooo, that's not great but if the game isn't text heavy it's still better than nothing.

>>
>>12550184
>>12550341

Does sanity mess up the game text like some old PC games did? The screen cap above may be out of context, if that's the case.
>>
>>12549741
Is it a translation, TRANSlation, or MTLation?
>>
>>12550184
I still just don't think it can take that long. Sentences, even machine translated, should be able to be parsed into something coherent fairly rapidly with any kind of collegiate reading ability. It's a video game, it's not classic literature.
Is there some way we can pitch in to these projects usually? I have zero technical skills but I read a lot of stuff in translation and am well versed in comparing various texts to understand what the original was trying to say. Often for very old and erudite works that video game text is child's play compared to.

It's another human being trying to tell a coherent plot, it's not some schizo ancient temple cuneiform writings. I feel like we can get to translating these games in rapid succession with a bit of organization. The only thing stopping me is that I have no idea how to patch and replace text like that
>>
>>12550624
Holy shit you're stupid.
>>>/v/
Leave....NOW
>>
>>12550624
The big issue is just that a person with both the ability to do a good job and the free time to do it quickly is a unicorn, so you need at least 2 unicorns in most cases. The only real outcomes are you get a good job done slowly, or you get a moron doing a crap job quickly.
>>
>>12550000
Dammit. MTL with a sapient english speaker editor at the end isn't that bad, but only seamonkeys and indians ever end up stooping to use it and they output complete shit.
>>
>>12550338
Are you the op? And this guy? >>12549797
If so, do you even know anything about this game? It's extremely text heavy.
>>
>>12550624
Even if you mean well, you are clueless. Japanese is a very context sensitive language. Translating a text heavy game that is also mechanically dense, such as a lot of older JRPG's, is seldom straightforward.
>>
>>12550845
But we largely know the context. They've been posting AI translations vs localizers on /v/ for months and the AI does reasonably fine by itself. This ain't that hard.
I get there's going to be a lot of different terms for the same person's name or various objects, like Russian.

The AI is good enough that clarifying text shouldn't be that hard. Hell, that shit translation pictured above in the thread can be rewritten reasonably ok just from what's shown.
>>
>>12550910
You can easily turn it into something intelligible, but without the original text and knowledge of the language you can't be sure you're turning it into something that accurately conveys as much of the original intent as possible.
>>
>>12550000
I'm guessing the "smell" is something akin to burning sage and you can get and use items which release various religious herbs that burn demons
Light is a similar thing that's probably a mix of actual light and some sort of holy/religious connotation of the objects used to produce said like. Like "Holy Fire" is sometimes used in English.
A bit more context actually booting the game would help but I'm like 60% certain that's the correct meaning of the items explained in this tutorial screen. Once you know that it can be rewritten more legibly without too much issue.

An item description/effect from a jap wiki would also be helpful but really that's just not that confusing and a human looking it over for 5 minutes should be enough to make it comprehensible
>>
>>12550914
With enough context you can be 95% correct without too much issue. The posted machine translation proves that it shouldn't take more than a few people with a good understanding and ability to read foreign text in translation.
It takes a deep understanding of the context but that's not that hard to get for a video game.

This is actually true. Especially the retards who are like "no, it's actually very dificult you don't understand japanese is extremely nuanced *sips tea*

Basically you have two types:

-the indian who doesn't know jack shit about english but still produces a translation,

-and the dude who actually does the work in like three weeks and puts it out in one post and then doesn't say anything else

All I'm saying is - there is no way it is harder to parse/rewrite some text in a video game translated from modern Japanese then it is to read some ancient ass literature.
I read this entire book, scanned directly from an original 1650s copy. And it includes texts from as far back as the 1200s. That's hard to parse, not AI translated video game text.

You should be able to translate all but the most text heavy games in a month or less. Literally the only hard part is getting all the text ripped to a single location so translators can work on it

Why would a shitty translation no one uses cause others to stop making a proper one? That sounds autistic as fuck. If the translation is so bad it's unusable then the translation may as well not exist

the Indian who did a shitty transaction isn't here. I'm a different guy just letting you know that even though this retarded fucking indian shit out the laziest unproofread translation ever, the AI is still better than you useless fucking trannies. This fail isn't a condemnation of AI, it's a condemnation of Indians.

We'll never know unless someone posts texts that can be translated now will we? The game text posted in this thread I managed to get the gist of despite being gibberish to others.
The fact that it's not commonplace to just post a game script and accept open source translations is just dumb. The easiest part of translating a game being gatekept behind tech autism is clearly not helping these games get translated faster

See here, this ain't complicated. And again I have literally zero context for this besides knowing you fight ghosts.
>>12550917
>>
>>12552367
I would love to, I just have no idea how to get the text into txt document that I can copy paste from. That is the only thing stopping me from trying to translate countless games.
>>
>>12552376
The technical stuff isn't so bad. It's even kind of fun, like a puzzle. Translating the text, on the other hand, is absolutely mind-numbing and will drive you insane.
>>
>>12552382
Go contact the guy that made this translation. No pussying out now.
>>
>>12551642
>Literally the only hard part is getting all the text ripped to a single location so translators can work on it
Not really. Just having a big spreadsheet dump of all the text is how you wind up with stuff like FF7's original translation. You need to have context for all the dialogue, so translators need to be able to actually play the game as well. Depending on how complex the game is, there can be a lot of triggers that require multiple playthroughs to check as well.
>>
>>12550000
the best part is because they released "something", community will now consider it "done" so no one will go back to fix it
>>
>>12552596
The discord group might keep working on it. I never joined it so I dunno if they're even active though.
>>
>>12551642
>Literally the only hard part is getting all the text ripped to a single location so translators can work on it
Nah, the hardest and most time consuming part is all the fucking QA and playtesting.
You can have a "perfect translation" on paper but wind up with shit that makes absolutely no sense once it's inserted into the game because you lacked context for various lines, who says them, when they happen, and so on and so forth.
Getting a first draft laid out? That IS easy, but only if you record a playthrough and/or have extensive documentation about each scene so that you know 100% what is going on.
There's nothing in this world worse than having to guess the context of text that rarely appears, or sometimes that doesn't even appear at all, and finding out you were wrong when you or a tester (or worse, a player) stumbles into it.
In a professional environment this isn't as awful because you can do stuff like ask for recordings of the game/the cutscenes/other shit, you can do your draft and pass it off to another translator/the editor to catch mistakes and adjust for tone and flow, hand it off to playtesters to make sure shit works properly. In the fan sphere, you're usually on your own or in a hacker/translator team with little other support.
A game the size of Final Fantasy VI or Chrono Trigger should realistically take less than a week to draft out and about that much time to clean up and edit... under ideal conditions. What no one tells you is, you never get "ideal" conditions.

>>12552725
I think anyone who is not also playing the game while translating is retarded. And if the game is non-linear? Fuck if I care, I release my 1.0 and then when people complain I ask for their save file and fix it
>>
>>12552596
That's fucking true, happens with visual novels. Must be even worse with games since the hacking part is more complicated
>>
>>12552423
To be fair those indians often don't reply or when they reply they act like fucking weirdos. It's really the biggest subhuman people making translations a lot of the time, especially if it's AI

>i dare ya i dare ya
Are you 12?
>>
>>12552885
>I think anyone who is not also playing the game while translating is retarded
But this is backwards.
Translation should always begin with a rigorous familiarization phase. A normal playthrough like any other player would do is the bare minimum. Better is one where you document the who/what/when/why/how of scenes, the dialogues you see in particular areas (towns, maps, dungeons, etc).
This is also your chance to record video footage if you think it will be helpful since storage space is basically a non-issue, and you can treat it like a stream or something if it makes you feel better.
The abundance of プレイ動画 on youtube/niconico sort of makes the above less vital if your game has that, but certain obscure titles may not have this, so then you're still on your own.

like I said enjoy your AI translation its just as good as the japanese which is a dry and boring language anyway! What a waste of time google traslate to hindi to spanish to chinese to english is actually so much more soulful.

I mean that's probably all YOU'D use it for, but you also lack the ability to actually learn another language. Your limitations aren't universal.

MTL has existed for more than a decade. It's one of the first professions to embrace "AI" (they called it 'learning machine'). Every single game you see released these days (including indies)? The translation was done through MTL+human proofreading and it's been like this since long before "AI" had become trendy.

This is what fan translators don't know or want you to know.
>>
>>12553790
The funny thing is this has always been common knowledge but with the proliferation of AI people have become more discerning and are pushing back on all forms of machine translation despite it being around forever.

Interesting, that does make sense. Although the other guy is right that you should be playing the game while reading/translating the script. Almost like a crossword puzzle - you decipher and fill in the blanks as you go along until eventually you have most keywords and names translations memorized and you can get through text much easier already knowing sonny
