If we're only taking retro titles into consideration, I prefer FF overall. DQ never stood out to me, but they're all solid. The only retro FF I didn't care for was 2, but its still a fine game.

Both.I find it astonishing how, despite being literally the most popular JRPG franchise ever, Dragon Quest managed to keep having engaging combat up until 8 on PS2, long after the average JRPG had become press X to win. In the FF series, starting from FF5, the entire point of the gameplay is the system, the preparation, which became more in-depth, but the actual combat became boring. The FF series yielded to casuals who demanded easier games starting with FF4 and how they felt the need to re-release an "Easy Type" version. For the DQ series the decrease in difficulty was much more gradual throughout the years and it doesn't get enough credit for that. What we're getting these days with those memeakes that basically play themselves, it could easily have been like that for the main series since the SNES, but it wasn't.

When they did return to the West it was to release an ugly PS1 game a year after the PS2 launched, so nobody gave a shit (and wouldn't have any time post-FF7). Enix couldn't have sabotaged the franchise any harder if they'd been trying.
