In what way is Half Life 2 a retro game? It feels no different then the majority of games that came out during the 7th gen and even early 8th gen. The only thing not modern is the lack of a live service

Toca 3 is so stupidly good looking it looks like an early 7th gen title

I played Doom 3 when it came out on PC, I recently bought the Xbox version and I would say I was impressed and even felt wrong that the game was on xbox and could run it, it felt more like a Xbox360 game. IDK why I had this feeling but I had it while playing it.

This was the power old devs had to optimize things and push the limits. There are always a few games that look a year or two ahead the rest. This was one of them. I’m very nostalgic towards this small period of DOOM support where we not only got doom 3(love it ot hate it) on PC, but a console port that never should have happened(videos explaining it are fun to watch) the DOOM movie with the rock which is a great slop film, and the doom RPG cellphone game. my dad and I (he introduced me to the original doom) saw the doom movie in theaters and had a great time. He and I for whatever reason probably rewatched it like 10 times over the years before he passed. When DOOM 3 came out it really blew my mind (I was starting HS at the time) and didn’t realize a FPS game could be so immersive and scary. It felt really hardcore to my impressionable mind at the time and I honestly felt like from here on out we would be getting crazier and crazier “horror” FPS games but it never really happened. I remember having to work up the courage to even play it which makes me laugh looking back on it. In a room with the lights of on a big CRT, which was great for that game.

The PC version forced you to use Steam. I more or less agree though; HL2's release should be the cutoff for /vr/-eligible PC games.
Then again, since it had an original Xbox version, it'd be kind of weird to ban discussion of the PC version while allowing discussion of the Xbox version.
Whatever the case, I don't understand why titles like Bioshock, Mass Effect 1, and Team Fortress 2 are allowed here. Those are all heavily associated with 7th gen, so they shouldn't be allowed just because they happen to also be on PC.

But you still replied to it, keeping it bumped and alive. Then I replied to you. I want this shit threads to be gone as well but as long as we reply they wont stop.

they comitted two major crimes in this game
>1. shotgun looks, feels and sounds amazing, but it's so fucking inconsistent
>2. revenants are so goddamn cool, but they are slow, rare and gameplay wise, they fucking suck. Too easy and rockets are far too slow
>2.1 they could've set some spoopy moments with him, but instead opted for cheap jumpscares

Not ONE goddamn weapon in D3 sounds good.

HL2 is absolutely the start of the dark ages in my book with its mandatory online activation which heralded the absolutely ass fisting companies would attempt to get away with in the following years.

This turd tech demo has nothing to do with next gen games, not even FEAR or Quake4. Even Perfect Dark on the 360 felt like shit.
>>
I think the rules are kinda weird

Persona 4 is not considered retro despite being a PS2 game

PC games from 2007 are considered retro when it's full on 7th gen (Crysis,Mass effect, BioShock...)

There is no perfect delimitation for PC and arcade gaming unlike consoles but i think 2006 is a more appropriate limit
It's the last year of 6th gen domination with most of the big games of that year were from 6th gen hardware,PS3 and Wii only released at the very end

I can't play any Half Life game without falling asleep. By far the most overrated series of all time. Every "innovation" they made was a detriment to gaming as a whole.
>>
>>12552023
Nah, the games have to be able to run on a pc from 2001 otherwise it's cheating.
That means no DirectX 9.0c games, which excludes all 360 multiplats like Bioshock.

HL2 might actually run on a 2001 pc
>>

Could you elaborate on what you mean by that?

I can’t think of a single valve game that doesn’t come off as either cringe lame or pretentious. spastic tf2 fans, obnoxious the cake is a lie portal fans, or pseudo intellectual half life players. Sums it all up. I agree a lot of half life’s “innovations”helped lock us in to the movie game ecosystem were in today. I’m probably being an asshole phrasing it that way but I never understood the appeal of those games. I tried. I suppose the contrast to that would be like how those types shit on the dudebro gamers. But I think at least that group is relatively relaxed and easy to get along with. People who just want cool shit. Nothing more than that. Something honest about it I respect.

okay now say something about the games instead of your opinions on the people who like them
>>

If you trim to 2006, gcn and xbox will be unaffected, sure,
but you're going to clip a quite significant amount of PS2 games and dx8 titles

really, the point of this board is to obviously avoid the pointless and depressing modern video game discourse,
which revolves around ragebaiting, gacha/waifushit
and whatever goyslop corpos are pushing

half life 2 was designed entirely around pc, nearly every major action game that released in the seventh gen was designed around consoles first. the elegance and freedom in the basic control of half life 2 is evocative of older mouse look games.

>but I never understood the appeal of those games.
approaching a shooter with more broad action adventure design that features puzzles and platforming instead of the one note combat focus that tends to be the case.

Yes, because console games have always been ahead of PC games.
>>
No regenerating health. But yeah, in every other way HL2 feels exactly like a modern game.

It had a strong POC female suppoeting character.
