I want to say it's the controller's fault but maybe it's the whole system. The controller feels like an unsubstantial hollowed out cheap piece of crap but none of the games really captivate me either. I like Sonic and Shining Force a little bit all the platformers and shoot em ups just feel clunky. Maybe it's the controller? No maybe it's that the games are just bad. I don't know. The sound chip is also very strange and doesn't sound very pleasant to me. I didn't grow up with this system but I'm trying to get into it but it just feels very archaic. Not like the Super Nintendo where I'm actually having fun with it. Am I missing something or is the Genesis a "you had to be there" console?
>>
Fiiine. In the 0.01% chance that this isn't console war bait, please list all the games you tried on Genesis and your top 10 Super Nintendo games so we can see if there is anything on Genesis that matches your taste.
>>
>>12552113
have you tried both the original genesis 3 button pad and the 6 button revision?
>>
>>12552113
yeah Sega Genesis is not for you. Go back to playing Nintendo
>>
>>12552113
A lot of your complaints sound like you're mostly playing western games, which in this era of games mostly don't hold up well especially on the Genesis with how SHIT most of them sound. Try sticking to the japanese stuff and you'll probably find you'll enjoy yourself a lot more.
However I will say if you're looking for games more RPG or "grand adventure" in nature, you're probably right and the SNES is much more your thing. Generally speaking Sega is where you go for quick and simple arcade action.

Super Metroid
Mega Man X
Chrono Trigger
Lufia
Super Mario World
Gradius

Actually I did like Lightning Force too but other platformers like earthworm jim and altered beast felt like I was playing a bootleg, like there was no polish to it whatsoever whereas in mega man everything just felt right, like I said in the OP there is something about it that just makes me feel like the quality isn't there but I'm having trouble to describe exactly what it is. I don't hate Sega, I actually love my Saturn but the Genesis just feels off.

From that list I'd recommend Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Phantasy Star 4, Lunar 1 & 2 (CD), Crusader of Centy, Beyond Oasis, Monster World 4, Wonder Boy in Monster World, Gleylancer, Gaiarus, Android Assault (CD), and Shinobi 3. Personally I like the game in your OP pic, TMNT Hyperstone Heist quite a bit. Ranger X is another personal recommendation.
Altered Beast is a very early arcade port and Earthworm Jim is a multiplat that has versions on SNES, not great representations of the system.

Sounds like you don’t like video games. It’s okay, the snes was full jarpig trash for “people” with your “tastes”. Stay away from the Saturn too, you’ll just hate it for having too many arcade games and not enough spiky haired metrosexuals.

I disagree about the controller. It's light and cheap, for sure. But the buttons are large and feel nice on the thumbs, not to mention that it holds in the hand really well. I'm using the 6-button revision which may help somewhat (although I believe the dimensions are the same if not very similar).

You don't have to like the Megadrive. The Sonic games are classics and there's a huge library of games, but those tend to have bigger barriers to entry vs. SNES games. Every game feels like you have to 'git gud', which would be fine if you were a kid in the 1990s, I'm sure, but when you're emulating and have an infinite amount of games to pick and choose from, its like 'do I REALLLY wanna sink in countless hours into Batman and Robin for that cool boss battle?' to which the answer tends to be 'eh, I'd rather play something else'. That being said I played through Ristar as a kid and it was really fun, its criminal that it never got a sequal. Vectorman looks, feels, sounds and plays really slick. Arcade-style games take up a bigger proportion of the Megadrive's library compared to the SNES e.g. Comix Zone, Decap Attack, Streets of Rage. They're all good games in fact I really like Streets of Rage but there is less variety and the more I flick through the Megadrive library the more the games feel like reskins even if they are mechanically different.

I could never get into Shining Force personally, but Phantasy Star IV is essential to any JRPG enthusiast's repertoire. Many will also argue II.

Appending to this largely just to say that if you want to get into Lunar 1 & 2, you really want to be playing the PS1 version. Those are the definitive ways to play those games. The Saturn also has advanced ports of those which you'd be better off playing...

Also I really enjoyed Altered Beast >_<; but yeah I can kind of understand why people might find it slow and clunky. Earthworm Gym I believe also has a port on the Saturn (with voice-acting?), don't quote me on that though.

...also now that I've read the list of games you've played OP, please do not miss Phantasy Star IV! And Castlevania: Bloodlines (though I assume you already knew that one).

I actually played a really cool Megadrive game on vacation but can't recall what it was called. Like a shmup but you were behind the ship in a semi-3D perspective... allegedly Burning Force based on the linked article. It seems the Megadrive has a few psuedo-3D shmups, who would have thought?

People will disagree, but the Genesis had the best home version of Ms.Pac-Man. I always keep finding myself going back to it, it's just that fun. Also it actually has an ending instead of just going on forever.

Lunar on CD and PSX are very different games.
Watch out for the (((Vile Tribe))) who were (((exiled by God))) and has now (((infiltrated leadership of human society to return the world to its structure before God lived as man among men)))

>Try sticking to the japanese stuff
This! As much as I love the Genesis, I have to admit Western devs weren't the best level designers during that generation. If my introduction to a platformer on the Genesis had me either go through mazes or narrow hallways, I'd hate the Genesis too. Toy Story was the best-designed game by a Western dev on that platform IMO, but even that game had the latter problem during the coin slot level. (Thankfully it's ONLY that level, and the rest of the game is quite sold.)

this, except Road Rash

street of rage 2 --> best 16 bit beath them up
rocket knight --> best 16 bit action game
thunder force 4 --> best 16 bit shoot game
dune 2 --> best 16 bit strategic game
landstalker --> best 16 bit adventure game

I like the snes but the good games arrived too late

However, on the Super Nintendo we have the best fighting and RPG games and I also recognize that chrono trigger is the best game of its generation in any category.

unpopular opinion: the SNES was a bit like the PS2 of its time.

I've heard the SEGA CD had more of the traditional JRPGs SNES gamers are after. However, that's personally my least-favorite genre, which is why I prefer the Genesis' library overall.

I have no idea how you can hate the Genesis controller, anyways try the 6 button version then, or emulate with your preferred controller, Genesis feels great to emulate with most controllers, but especially arcade fightsticks, and Saturn inspired controllers like what 8BitDo and RetroBit have been offering for a few years now, it's a non issue.

As for the library, Genesis' more arcade focused than SNES, feeling more like a successor to the NES than its actual successor in my eyes, also it relies on trial and error and mastering what you're playing often, you won't get many +2hrs adventures, but mostly 30min ones that takes you days to master enough to win, and that's where the fun often is for me.

I lovecthe Genesis and even I cant stand its controller. Such smushy buttons, bad ergonomics, dpad is just garbage. Genesis games play so much better with an arcade pad.

Road Rash 2 is so fucking good. Easy top 3 Genesos game for me.
