Is it the greatest jrpg ever made? Even people that don’t like jrpgs (like me) tend to like it. Is there a single other jrpg that can compete with its aesthetics or atmosphere?
Recently I found out that the Saturn is quite the RPG machine
>>12552320no
>>12552329As is the Genesis. People often overlook rpgs on sega consoles for whatever reason. Shining Force is a far better series than Fire Emblem, imo.
>>12552321Not even as good as Trigger. Which is already a very overrated game.
i really wish there were more jrpgs with non-anime aesthetics.
Oh boy once again time to pretend a mediocre jrpg is good because it was on the Saturn instead of the Playstation
you don't need to be so salty just because panzer dragoon saga is better than any final fantasy title
>>12552320If this was on PS1 it'd rightfully be considered a 6/10 at best.
no, that's not Anachronox
>>12552392Oh boy once again it's time to enter and interact in a thread on a game I personally don't like
>>12552320The biggest scam in RPG history, how many poor fellas got they money stolen in the hope of playing an amazing game that turns out to be mediocre af-10 hour long game...and even with just that it's pretty poorly paced-awfull dungeons-control only 1 character so no group synergy which is an essential part of RPG strategy and planning -extremely easy game even for the standard of the time-there is an inverse ranking system, the better you play the easier the game become...completely absurd it should be the contrary-2 villages...-full 3D Saturn game...so yeah it's pretty ugly-the story is nothing to write home aboutSega fans you should be ashamed of yourself for participating on that scam
>>12552424If PDS is a 6/10 then FF7 is a 3/10. I genuinely can’t think of anything it does better outside of uh… production values and marketing. I guess.
>>12552492>10 hour long game And that’s a good thing! Your bloated visual novels and spreadsheet simulators taking 50 hours to beat is why anyone with taste hates them.
>>12552504Combat with actually depth to begin with and tricky bossesYou're a pathetic troll who problably haven't played either of these games
>>12552550>Combat with actually depth to begin with and tricky bossesYou’re aware that FF7 means Final Fantasy 7 right? It’s not even challenging by Final Fantasy standards. Talking about challenge and depth when talking about a jrpg is nuts to me. Jrpgs ultimately come down to their atmosphere, art direction, music and style, and saga BTFOs FF7 in all of that quite easily. Moebius>whatever animu slop influenced FF7.
>>12552492But it's a Gayga Shitturn exclusive so it must be good!
>>12552562>Jrpgs ultimately come down to their atmosphere, art direction, music and style, and saga BTFOs FF7 in all of that quite easily.Hmm no that's not the case
>>12552606Cool jpg, you are missing the retarded looking dumbell arms chibis though
>>12552601Rent free.
>>12552492why yes it's not your copy/pasta clone jarpig that are just endless clones of each-other so it hurts your autism we get that. buy a blog
>>12552320I really want to play this but I'm autistic and have to play them in order and the first one filtered me hard.
>>12552617Use the invincibility cheat if you just want to “experience” the entire first game. The second game could possibly still filter you, though.
>>12552320No, no it isn't the greatest JRPG ever made. It's one of the most artistically and mechanically imaginative JRPGs ever made, and when I say "one of" I'm talking top five or top ten material. It's also the most technically ambitious game on the Saturn (I know, I know, big whoop) and probably the most technically ambitious 32-bit console title. Not the most technically impressive, just the most ambitious. Personally I'd have preferred a bigger game with less 3D, less cut scenes, less voice acting, and more pre-rendered backgrounds, more characters, more locations, and more written text. The Panzer setting deserves better than a world map with 4 dungeons and one village shop.
Great atmosphere, good story, bad gameplay
>>12552717>bad gameplayWelcome to jrpgs. Please enjoy your stay.
>>12552492I like the game, but it is genuinely pathetic how small it feels. RPGs on Apple II have larger-feeling worlds; no overworld, just a few dots you can choose to go on a map, and about half of them disappear as the game progresses. This was in development for about three years and that’s all they could muster?
>>12552492Really? 10 hours for a 4 discs game? Does the game has lots of FMVs or something?
>>12553209A bunch of voice over, too
>>12553209It is fairly cutscene heavy in some places. Keep in mind, this game has zero grinding, party management or going through menus constantly. Took me about 15 hours, but you can get more time out of it, since it has quite a few secrets and hidden side quests. It’s a jrpg without all the padding and walls of text. It’s why FF fags hate it.
>>12552358That's still anime, retard.
>>12552320I'm not a big fan of cutscene heavy games, but that's really the only problem I had with it.
>>12552694I finally played it last year because I wanted to see if it was overrated or not, and I really enjoyed it for how different it is.Beating the game, I think the combat system was underutilized. One of the coolest things about it is how you can morph your dragon towards different stats in real-time, in battle, and in such a wide variety of ways, but you don't necessarily need to in order to beat the game.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOj0EYkZOD4If it did well enough commercially to get a sequel, they could have run with all that. Added Omega Weapon like bosses and rushes that you have to meticulously optimize your dragon around mid-battle. It's tragic they literally killed themselves to build it all out for it to become obscure and forgotten.
>>12554419It’s a Japanized version of Moebius’ art. A French comic book artist who did the cover for PD1. It’s still going to have a Japanese style to it. But it’s nothing like typical anime slop. It’s actually a great blend of eastern and western aesthetics.
>>12552358I really wish the actual game looked remotely like this.
>>12552320You fags overrate this game so much it's hilarious that no one gave a fuck about this mid game until it's price became big. This would be a 7/10 if was released on the playstation.
>>12556212>no one gave a fuck about this mid game until it's price became bigWow, it’s almost like no one in the US owned a Saturn at the time. Through emulation, people have slowly realized that it’s better than your typical trashy, dime a dozen jrpg on the PlayStation.
>>12556508Denial is the refusal to accept reality, truth, or a request, often serving as a psychological defense mechanism against uncomfortable facts
>>12556512What am I denying? I’ve played all of the big ps1 rpgs and thought they were mediocre or straight up trash (except Parasite Eve, Legend of Legaia and Vagrant Story, love those.) I played Saga and liked it more than anything on PlayStation. I’m not even a sega cultist but it’s just that good.
>>12556515>>12552492I already explained why this game is midBad gameplay,no content, awfull dungeons, mid storyTell me what's so "that good" about this game please
>>12552342Genesis somehow had a much more diverse range of RPGs. The SNES had a ton of standard JRPGs that mostly played the same, while the Genesis had games like Sword of Vermilion, Starflight, Exile, Shadowrun, D&D: Warriors of the Eternal Sun, etc, and they were all very different from each other.
>>12556532You are profoundly uncultured in terms of SNES J-RPG library i suggest you quit here
>>12556545I had a Super Wildcard DX (floppy disk pirate system) in 1996 and have probably played every RPG on the system, outside of random JP-only games that didn't have translations before I lost interest. There are a lot of good JRPGs on the SNES, but that doesn't change the fact that there wasn't a very diverse range of games among them. You had the standard FF/DQ types, then Secret of Mana/Evermore, Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG as the only real standouts that did things any differently. What else?
>>12556527>Bad gameplayI like the combat system. It’s infinitely more interesting than the combat in your typical spreadsheet simulator.>no contentSaga has more secrets and side quests than you’d think. I bet you never even found the hidden dragon forms.>bad dungeonsThey’re fine to me. The only shit one is the one where you lose your dragon and have to ride the hoverbike.>mid storySubjective. I liked how mysterious and non anime it feels.
>>12556545Most snes jrpgs aren’t that good, bro. I’ve played them all. There’s good reasons to own a snes, the RPGs aren’t one of them.
>>12556552>You had the standard FF/DQ types, then Secret of Mana/Evermore, Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG as the only real standouts that did things any differently. What else?Hum Fire emblem 4,Thracia 776,Live a live to name a few
>>12556569I'm not that big of a fan of SNES J-RPG but saying Megadrive J-RPG are more diverse is straight up factually wrong
>>12556578>talking about SNES RPGs>lists SFC-only gamesOk. You could have listed Ogre Battle. There's not much else that isn't some variation of walk around on a grid and random battles pop up. Again, I'm not saying that means there are no good RPGs. It's a great system for RPGs. It's just not that diverse among them.
>>12556579i said Genesis RPGs are more diverse, not JRPGs specifically, which would be stupid because most JRPGs are basically the same at their core. You walk around on a tile grid and a random battle pops up. Usually FF/DQ style battles. Team members join and leave as you progress through the story. The SNES has literally a hundred RPGs like that. Compare that to something like Starflight which is an RPG but does none of those things.
