Why is it such a perfect game, aesthetically, musically, and gameplay-wise? Even 3 decades later nothing else comes even close.

I tried it out several months back and didn't bother going past the third stage.

Doom's combat really shined with the target priority kind of combat loop. Every monster had a most efficient way to take it down, and a place in line of which to kill first, and that order and method would be constantly changing based on the environment and weapons at hand. Cramped and close space? shotgun the pinkies and the cacos first then mop up the zombiemen. Wide open area with lots of cover? You can safely avoid the imps and cacos while you prioritize the hitscanners. Its just solid combat with satisfying weapons, good plagiarized music and an art style that is easy on the eyes without being too dull. My only main critiques of Doom 1/2 is that the community always made better maps than the vanilla game's and that late into Doom 1 you really start to feel the lack of enemy diversity that Doom 2's monster roster brings.

I find Heretic and Hexen's aesthetics to be much cooler.

I have to agree, especially Hexen. The dark fantasy setting and hub style worlds were really cool. I've been meaning to try out Hexen 2
>>
A focus on realism and linearity did it in honestly. ID understood that games had to be fun before they're realistic
>>
I never got into it. I enjoyed Wolfenstein 3D more because of its simpler aesthetics and arcade feeling. Heretic was way cooler to me, as well as the Elder Scrolls games Arena / Daggerfall. Yeah, they are RPG's but they have the first person perspective. As soon as I got my hands on Shadow Warrior and later Half Life, I never played Doom 1 / 2 again. The weapon selection is sort of bland and uninteresting, apart from the BFG (which you don't get to play with early on, and when you do, ammo is limited). The level designs are quite dull. The most interesting feature is the monster design, I'll admit the demons are really cool. But I do feel that if you were like me, venturing into the FPS genre in the year 1998, 1999, 2000, there was very little reason to play the first Doom over other, much cooler games.

Every fps is a doom clone and they never get it right.

True. I love the bizarre often nonsensical architecture of Doom.

You just fell for the novelty of seeing real time 3d rendering for the first time. Looking back now, Doom with its crisp sprite based graphics looks way better than any 3d game from the 90s.

DOOM is the most perfect game ever made
>>
>>12555917
Only if you're talking about the shareware version. Episode 3 is nearly unplayable.

>aesthetically
Unironically looks like feces through and through. Marathon, System Shock, and Unreal have much better aesthetics.
>musically
You can't be serious. Doom has plagiarized music composed in the simplest, dumbest, and most ear grating way. If you think you like 90s music go fucking listen to Valis OST on PC Engine CD or Jesper Kydd's works on Sega Genesis, now those are the real deal.
>gameplay-wise
Meh. Fun for 1993 but pretty boring otherwise. Movement feels floaty. Guns don't feel as powerful as they should. Level designs are a mixed bag, some great level designs but some awful ones too. There were better fps games coming out just a couple of years later.
>Even 3 decades later nothing else comes even close.
Because you don't even play video games.

Seems more like skill issue
>>
>>12553227
i like the aesthetics a lot too but i'm not sure if it's just nostalgia, the first room to the left in the first level and this exact bridge are ingrained in my memory, always loved that skybox
>>
i still feel doom is a bit colorful and cartoonish at times
