>sell items to the player>call them a pussy for using themWhat is the meaning of this game design?
>>12553993
>>12553993to give you something if you really need the help but to encourage you to git gud enough to not need to use them. kamiya said some things about dmc were inspired by his time at arcades and i guess it's the equivalent of putting another coin in the slot. i'd wonder more why the game actually gives you some of those items for free at various points if that's the case though.
idk but it's funny
>>12553993It's resource management. You are given a few of them and need to be frugal. But if you are a really cool guy you will choose not use them at all. That's reflected in the score at the end. They also knew you could grind for them and that you should feel lame doing it but that really bad players might need it as a fall back.
I rather just have a mode where the items dont exist at all. Dont design a game and fill it with intentional items/mechanics and then scold me for making use of the intended design.
>>12554837Thankfully that has been largely phased out as "gamers" themselves fill that responsibility
>>12553993Megaman Zero does the same shit.
>>12554331>Swallow, but don't digest. Digest, but don't shit. Shit, but don't listen. Listen, but don't smell. Smell, but don't look.
>>12553993It's there for if you're bad and need it in order to beat the game. Rather than weakening enemies or making encounters easier overall, you include an item that makes it possible for worse players to beat the game but let them know that the developer intends for them to aspire to get better to the point they don't need them.>>12554136>i'd wonder more why the game actually gives you some of those items for free at various points if that's the case though. To remind the player that it's there if they need it/show them how it works.>>12554837Game design is always about compromises. Sometimes the player just needs the help of the item in question as they get to grip with things or are going through on their first playthrough, but the intended design is to go without. They chose to include them for those less skilled players because some of them will take the hint of the "scolding" and actually push themselves to do better, which they might not do if the game was otherwise silent on its use.
