>9/10 score by IGN
>4 out of 5 on X-Play
>sold 2 million copies in its first month
>outsold every GTA clone of the era (Getaway etc)

Cant think of many series that were this successful that just left no legacy whatsoever. Was the sequel so bad ?

I played the sequel and it was decent (but a little buggy on the cube). The development studio kinda just stopped after it, no? And then we had Saints Row but that shat the bed too
>>
>>12554184
The sequel had poor sales. The third game was cancelled, and Square Enix revived that project as Sleeping Dogs. Which also had it sequel cancelled.
>>
True Crime was kino through and through. Not enough YouTube essays for ya?
>>

I remember being confused as a kid when I looked at reviews of NYC online. I thought the game was equal to the first one, but it was getting 4/10s. I heard the PS2 version is the best version, surprisingly, and that is the one I played.
>>
>>12554184
it was the first GTA clone that's why the mindless herd bought it only to find out it's fucking garbage and nothing can rival the real GTA
as for the critic scores that's just gayming jornos being faggots with shit taste
>>
>legacy

>Nothing can rival GTA
Scarface says hi
>>
>>12554184
Never heard of it. Looks like some weird mix of weab and ghetto shit.

>Slopface
came out too late in 2006, you can argue it's better than Reddit City but unfortunately for Slopface it came out after the abosulte peak of innovation that was San Andreas
there is no GTA clone that didn't look inferior/outdated next to SA except for Saints Row 2

>True Crime New York
>get call about a domestic dispute
>criminal has a gun and gets away
>still went out of my way to answer the call
>beat up the victim and plant drugs on her to still get an arrest
>vidrel comes on the radio right after
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuzA4U1njO8
This series was so good

LMFAOOOO gta has TRASH gameplay. Scarface and Godfather mog it brutally.
>>
>>12554184
TCNY was basically a disaster, every version is fucked up in some terrible way aside from PS2
>>
>>12554184
>Was the sequel so bad ?
Because it was released on outdated hardware and ran like shit and also they replaced the cool kung fu dude with a nigger.
>>
>>12554438
Scarface had just as much innovation
>Slop
Oh I see, you're a dumb Zoomer (kind of redundant I know)

Lmao, I played this on release and pretty much everyone agreed it was garbage.
>>

Decent soundtrack too. Multiple genres from Grunge, garage punk, house music, G funk, the list goes on. This game should have gotten better development
>>
both games were shit honestly
sequel was a technical mess, it was buggy and ran like shit on everything

DON'T DO THE CRIME
IF YOU CAN'T DO THE TIME
>>
>>12554184
because neither game was good, and Streets of LA only performed well because it was the first real attempt at competing with GTA. Saints Row and Driver 3 didn't launch until later, and the Getaway was like Mafia in that although it technically had an open world map the story and gameplay were structured like a linear action game.

I'd argue that LA is actually worse than NY on a conceptual and feature level, and the only reason NY bombed is because of the glitches.

I only played NYC as a kid and I loved it. Cool songs and I loved how you can enter every building (even if there were only 5 types on interiors). It felt immersive. Random crime activities were fun. Too bad they didn't carry the system to Sleeping Dogs. You could make grannies pepper spray you then arrest them.
>>
>>12554923
it's one of those games that really could've benefited from a few more months in the oven. just enough to iron out the issues.
>>
>>12554184
Had this as a teenager. Think I beat it like once or twice and never picked it up again.
>>
>>12554923
I remember a mission in which you have to infiltrate like an insane asylum and little midget that speaks funny guides you around the place, that shit was scary
>>
>>12554415
I bought True Crime as a kid and this is exactly what I thought. No idea how i'd feel about the game now.
>>
>>12554961
the original legit feels like one of those asset flip browser games you'd see on Miniclip back in the day. it's bad. real bad. the only worthwhile elements is the silly writing in the cutscenes, which you can easily experience by simply watching them on YouTube. NYC is about halfway towards being a decent game but it's also a glitchy mess that based on pure RNG can totally lock your save out of beating the game.

I am a EOD Agent....open up!
>>
>>12554184
Both games are garbage.
>>
>>12554438
Inferior vehicle physics and no aircrafts aside, Scarface is much more fun than SA.
>>
>>12554184
I like this game but most of the sales/hype for it were because it was the first big GTA clone after GTA 3 blew up
