Waverace 64 and 1080 Snowboarding are 2 very much beloved extreme sports games released for the N64, people talk fondly about them and reminisce about the titles either because of the music, the GRAPHIXS or the little touches and weird things in each game, but i've noticed that not a single soul ever talks Excitebike 64, despite the game being well reviewed (88 in metacritic, similar to 1080 but below Wave Race) and having a decent amount of sales (about 2.000.000 according to Nintendo and Left Field studios, which puts it once again in a similar spot to 1080 but below wave race)So why is that nobody ever talks about this game unlike the other 2 extreme sports games mentioned?
>>12555239It came out really late in the system's life. Also lacks the visual polish of the other two games. For an outsourced game to an American company it does a good job overall though, same with Ridge Racer 64.
It came too late into the console's life despite selling well, and unlike 1080 or Wave Race it doesn't has a memorable aesthetic, game is also very difficult to master unlike the first two games too, so I can see why it isn't as fondly remembered even if its a great game.
>>12555239>So why is that nobody ever talks about this game unlike the other 2 extreme sports games mentioned?Because those 2 games were made by Nintendo
>>12555282>It came out really late in the system's lifeParticularly late in Europe too, like a whole year and a few months later, which limited the reach
>>12555239I don't know if Excitebike even came out here, I never saw it, I know we (Australia) didn't get Kirby 64 because of how late it was, it might just have been that it was so late in what was mostly a failed console at that point.
>>12555239the desert mode felt really impressive at the time
honestly, it needed more bips and bops like 1080 and Wave Race
My guess is because it's not as immediately gratifying to play. You pick up Wave Race and you can get the hang of the controls and win at least a few races basically immediately. Same thing with 1080. With Excitebike 64, maybe it's just me, but it's a lot more difficult to get a grasp on the controls and feel of everything. I still need to give it a proper chance, I've booted it up a few times over the years and just get put off almost immediately every time.
>>12556605that's a good point, Excitebike 64 is not as much of an arcade style racer like Wave Race and 1080, it's not full on simulation by any means but the difference is there
