I never got the appeal. The world is barren and generic, the soundtrack is forgettable, the art direction is clunky, the gameplay is boring, and every game is the same. It feels like Croc had a kid with Bubsy 3D.

I dont like Spyro nearly as much as other PS1 platformers/collectathons like Crash, Ape Escape, PacWorld or even the Looney Tunes games but its still a great game, I like how compact the worlds are, makes using the charge move more fun.

It's the only one where you can clear everything on your first pass through, which I would argue gives it an edge over the others. But it does look/feel a little undercooked in a few areas compared to the sequels.

I had both Crash 1 and Spyro 1 growing. I liked Crash, but I hated how the camera was almost constantly behind the character. Sure, it added an interesting dynamic. Spyro felt more like Mario. Though desu, my favorite platformer on PS1 was Ape Escape followed by Muppet Monster Adventure (maybe with Bugs Bunny Lost In Time closely behind)

NTA, 2 has some high points. The hover, swimming, and power-ups are all nice additions. The levels have more complex layouts, and the new movement options make them fun to explore and make for some fun challenges.

For more subjective matters: The levels all have distinct themes and I can remember more of them than I can for levels in the first game. The narrative bits also give the game a lot more personality, though I could absolutely understand this being a turnoff.

My only major gripes are that while some minigames are fine, there are like 5 bad ones that really spoil the rest, and the mandatory backtracking to 100% some levels is annoying.

Nope. Spyro 2 and 3 are focused more on side activities and story and loose the fairytale vibe, minus the hub worlds in 2.

It's not a bad game but I dislike how the main focus is on collecting hundreds of gems rather than having any real objectives. It makes the entire game feel like the 100 coin stars in Mario 64, which are the worst parts of that game and other games that have something similar. Spyro 2 and 3 tried to fix this by adding proper level objectives and missions but the gems are still the main focus and are made even worse by having more of them and spreading them out thinner across the now larger levels. It's really too bad because the graphics are pretty good, the music is great and the controls are decent, the actual game and level design was just never quite there.
