Why didn't Japan like Xbox?

They did though.

Same reason everyone but America didn't care about it, no worthy exclusives

They made it illegal to rent video games in Japan during the 1980s. They didn't want blockbusters for NES cartridges in Japan
>>
>>12555979
Not enough JP appeal. It got Tecmo and Sega games, but that just couldn't cut the mustard. They also hated the design.

The Xbox booth babes were so fucking ugly, I genuinely feel grossed out looking at them. Whoever was in charge of hiring them should be shot.

Why did anyone like Xbox should be the question

Peak soulless trash carried out by plundering industry secrets and would-be DreamCast games (and GameCube games in the case of Rare), and then for the latter half of the Xbox 1 lifecycle it was clueless american executives throwing buckets of money with zero creative vision and constantly sabotaging projects later in the development cycle, and even that was still their peak
They had Level-5 develop a JRPG, insist on online capabilities, knowing the service would be scrapped half a year later.
Blinx (pic related) had very different graphics during development but got the American Box Art treatment but ingame, that was the Microsoft touch

For the Xbox 360 it was throwing money to secure temporary JRPG exclusives and even then they did a rugpull and stopped funding around 2009 (cancelled Cry On is one casualty), then accepting visual novels and indie/low budget games rejected by Sony, which Sony then stopped (and overcompensated for during Vita) while Xbox did a rugpull around 2011. Then they heavily pushed for Kinect and then rugpulled developers (the Yu Gi Oh Kinect exclusive that ended up only showcased on tradeshows), then their last few Japan exclusives were rugpulled as well (Crimson Dragon X360 was cancelled AFTER release with 3 hours because MS wanted a Xbox One launch title, so the game went unreleased for two years and released in a worse state + Scalesbound + Hi-Fi Rush)
>>
>>12555979
Microsoft REALLY underestimated the importance of JRPGs over there.

Keep in mind the Xbox was codenamed "The DirectXBox", for some context.

>The project was codenamed the Manhattan Project, like the World War II project of the same name, and the idea was to displace the Japanese-developed video game consoles with personal computers running Microsoft's operating system. It had initially used the radiation symbol as its logo but Microsoft asked the team to change the logo.

Gee, I wonder why...

That's the Japanese taste for video games.
They don't care about your latest dudebro and cinematic western crap

You don't understand, do you?
The japanese have a different taste in video games. Playing Halo, eating pizza/doritos and drinking MTNdew while calling each other a fag isn't their way of gaming.

In their minds, everything in that image is considered "gaijin slop"
>>
>>12555979
no Final Fantasy. if FF11 had been an Xbox exclusive it would've done for them in Japan what Halo did for Xbox in the West.
>>
>>12555979
Does the OG Xbox have a niche following in japan, like the Saturn or PC-Engine in the west?
>>
>>12555979
if you dont care about halo theres nothing else good about the console
>>
>>12557458
>Crimson Skies
>Fable
>Dead or Alive
>JSRF
>Mech Assault
>Panzer Dragoon Orta
>Steel Battalion
and where the Xbox really shined was multiplats, which almost universally were better on Xbox.
>>
>>12555979
The look and feel of the console was all wrong.
If Microsoft had marketed it as a spiritual successor to the MSX it would have capitalized on a lot more appeal.
It should

-have come with a keyboard and mouse
-been a gray or white color
-not have been called "Xbox" but something with more identity.
-not used the nuclear green color
-had a more "hi-fi" look and feel

>They don't care about your latest dudebro and cinematic western crap
Makes perfect sense that you seethe at a truly chad console as an effeminate weeb faggot.
>>
>>12555979
They like it enough, but it was Microsoft's fault for being a bit off-putting with their project names for the system that was anti-Japanese, like Project Midway for the system as a "decisive victory against the Japanese" or the S-controller project name of Akebono Taro as in "American that beats the Japanese at their own game". Maybe without that adversarial approach the overall impression may be better. A system named some slur-station would be pretty offensive and not done well in the US so imagine that how it was in Japan.

The Xbox could've shipped with a native version of MS Office and marketed as a work and play machine for the mature Japanese yuppie market.
>>
>>12555979
Because they screwed over Japanese devs again and again since day 1 in addition to not understanding what Japanese people liked in their games. No shit that their reputation would falter with the Nips and become an irrelevant third wheel to Sony and Nintendo. That's basically the story of Xbox: thinking they can brute force their way to the top by dishing out more and more money.

>>12556756
Kinda ironic since Japan is still doing fine and most of American gaming is moribund or near moribund, especially he Xbox brand.

>>12557064
NTA but yeah. Microsoft has been a net negative for gaming ever since they entered the market. It's a good thing they've lost relevance since the 360 days probably be shuttered, further diminishing their minuscule hold on the gaming market. Other than Xinput standardizing controllers and Direct X (before 12), they haven't done one good thing for gaming and infact held it back drastically.
