I've heard some pretty retarded criticisms about this game; everything from "there aren't enough wide open fields" to "there's no 1 frame reload animation for the shotguns". Spurious, meaningless nitpicks. The fact is, this game is better than the original games. DOOM II was my first PC shooter, and 25 years later I can play DOOM 64 and happily admit, without bias, that this is the superior experience. The graphics and graphical style are better. The color palette and lighting systems are better. The weapons are better (both visually and mechanically, such as the vastly improved chaingun and BFG), the monsters are more intimidating with less cartoonish designs and generally greater in size (such as the enourmous Cyberdemon that makes the original look like a manlet), the sprites were sourced from fully rendered 3D models rather than fucking pictures of household objects and toy guns, the ambient music is unintrusive and enjoyable compared to the blaring MIDI tunes found in the PC originals, there are more types of traps and hazards, puzzles and secrets are more complex, the hidden levels are vastly more interesting, and the final boss fight is as good or better than DOOM 1. Say what you want about mod capabilities and wads, but taken purely as an unadulterated singleplayer experience, DOOM 64 is better than the classic DOOM games.

you are not allowed to say positive things about N64 games in this board, jannies. grab him

>N64
I’d say Nintendo in general. This is a sega board. There’s so many true believers here still fighting that 90s console war inside their heads.

dishonest shitpost aside, i literally just finished doom64 two days ago(pc version), while doom 2 has lots of ups and downs, the quality of the levels is pretty even on average in doom64, the levels are nothing to write home about, got really tired of the game throwing me tanky barons of hell in the later levels everywhere, the hidden key collectibles was an ok idea i guess, also the ambient soundtrack is whatever

>got really tired of the game throwing me tanky barons of hell in the later levels everywhere
Losing the nastier half of the doom 2 bestiary really hurt the game, not much of it ever felt very threatening.

None have actually sat down and went through random genesis games.
I have and i can tell most are beyond horrendous. There was very little quality control and some are so bad, they classify as pre-alpha copies.

That's not to say SNES doesn't have some stinkers, but the quality there is marginally higher.
And yet, many threads pop up cherry picking very specific high production titles, completely brushing over
the fact there's a massive steaming pile of shit behind the curtains.

It's like a psyop that ended 30 years ago and drones kept going, incapable of learning anything, forever stultified.

Its the Sonic CD of the Doom series. It is a very good game but its lacking in enemy variety and the maps are a bit bland. Graphics wise its one of the best looking and sounding N64 games in my opinion.

I don't know about better, but it's a solid game, definitely worth a playthrough. Like others said, It can get a bit repetitive at times since it doesn't have the full roster of monsters.

Doom 64 is very good, I loved it, my only criticism being that there aren't enough enemy types, the super shotgun doesn't have animations and that I think they switched up the cacodemon and pain elemental sprites.
Other than that yeah the ambiance is unmatched, the gameplay is good and the levels look very nice.

Based OP. Every single thing you said was correct. Doom 64 is the peak of Doom.

>there's no 1 frame reload animation for the shotguns
I literally prefer no reload whatsoever to the ugly as ass reload animation of Doom 2's super shotty. Shits just gross to look at.

Great game but unironically to dark
>>
Any good mods for Doom that adds the ambient music and colored lighting that the N64 and PSX games offered?
>>

That's a retarded comparison. Sonic CD added way more to Sonic 1 than 2 did.
