Sports sold very well and was a big part of the success of the Genesis.There was a divide in the 7th gen with """hardcore gamers""" shitting on sports games to show they were "hardcore" and not "casual", which also coincided with yearly rehashed sports releases becoming out of control. As a result people these days think it was always like this, but it wasn't like this in the 90's. Hardcore gamers played sports titles too. You look on usenet it's not hard to find people listing games they played and casually listing sports titles amongst everything else.
