Technically a “search action” if you leave enemies alive and can backtrack through most of the levels

>Game of the Year
Pretty bold considering this is the same year as Starcraft, Fallout 2, MGS, Grim Fandango, Thief, RE2, and Baldurs Gate... wonder how much Valve payed them
>>
>>12557449
Technically a "point and click adventure" since it's an adventure where you point and click.
>>
>>12557449
Technically an RPG since you roll, play and game

roll what?

Its not a popular opinion at all but im just gonna say I truly think Half-Life at the time was more significant of a release than any of the games you listed.
>Changed the FPS genre forever
>Was as much of a graphics leap fprward as Doom
>Small studio's first release
>Had broad appeal of an easy to pick up action game as opposed to games with a more narrow target audience / less normie friendly

>leave enemies alive
There really is not many places in HL1 where you can let an enemy survive so this point is a real stretch.

This joint, nigga!

A. "search action" is not the name of a genre. That doesn't mean anything.
B. Half-Life is an FPS. Nothing more, nothing less.

Unreal came out earlier the same year and looked better
What made HL impressive was the NPCs doing stuff and talking to each other while you were doing other shit

>search action
Are you describing key hunts? Half Life has no keys.

the cinemafication of video games

>NPCs doing stuff and talking to each other while you were doing other shit
that wasn't even the biggest thing, just NPCs being NPCs
the real big thing was letting the player control the character while scripted shit was happening, what in all other games would have been a cutscene with some third person view/cinematic camera angles (which makes it ironic and stupid when people that hate what HL did, call it "cinematic")
another thing was the continuity of maps, it felt like one, huge world - opposed to hard and obvious level cuts with often drastically changing themes between them in other games
