What if Nintendo never scrubbed their early shmup identity after DK? My bet is that they'd make some of the earliest cute 'em ups, since their games were more character-driven by that point.

Is Space Firebird any good? I'm intrigued by what little I've seen of it.
How well does it emulate on MAME?

Playing it right now, and it is! It's basically a more frenetic Galaga, with tons of bullets to dodge. Makes me wish Nintendo tried to experiment more with the shmup genre, because they've already come a long way since Sherrif.
>How well does it emulate on MAME?
Great, though I believe it requires a sample file alongside the ROM itself.

Because shmups were seen as outdated slop after the 80s

How so? Xevious was one of THE most influential shmups of all time and went on to inspire countless copycats of its own. (Including the first few Thunder Force games, though the latter entries switched entirely to a standard horizontal perspective.)

they had no choice. they were shit at the genre.

Personally I still say it was too early to make that assumption, they just haven't went outside of making a fixed-screen vertical shooter yet. (Unless you count Sky Skipper as one of their shmups.)

not really. nintendo were incapable of programming anything themselves at this time (same as sega for their early titles). the code and arcade board is by Ikegami Tsushink. nintendo only got credit for graphics, design, sound and related IP.

Oh my god, totally forgot about that dude! Makes me view Crazy Kong in a whole new light, that was already chaotic as is.
