Are the SA1 and SA2 GameCube ports really as bad as /vr/ says?

Sonic Adventure DX is genuinely a bad "enhanced" port, they actually cut a director (Naoto Ohshima) and do that awful Japanese think where they unperson him from the credits because he dared leave the company by then despite the fact the portion of his work was mostly intact.
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is an improvement outside of minor graphical quirks that came with porting to different system architecture, they basically rushed the Dreamcast version to meet the 10th anniversary so the GameCube one is pretty much it with less time constraints.

It's very mediocre, too much on-rails stuff and autolock everywhere.

But what you can do here? If you're going for these large stages and speed sections,

The downgrades are well known at this point but just imagine how much more obscure SA1 and 2 would be if the ports didn't exist

SADX GC has specular combined with per pixel lighting

Many of the original DC assets are still present on the pre release version
Even the lantern engine. They ported successfully the original lighting system of SA1 into DX but they decided to make a new one in the final release

SA1 DC both diffuse and specular lighting use color gradients, and specular has a fixed direction
SADX GC the specular is view dependent so the highlights rotate when you move the camera but the plastic look is because they crank it up very high

Why did they screw with the game if it wasn't a hardware limitation? Were they trying but failing to recreate the lighting that was supposedly in prerelease Dreamcast builds?

SA2 DC to SA2B is largely the same game with minor changes due to hardware differences between the Dreamcast and GameCube.

SA1 DC to SADX is when Sega decided to make changes

That's one of the reasons why the modded PC version of DX is considered one of the best ways to play the game
You basically get the Dreamcast version except you can skip cutscenes and it runs at 60 FPS

GC Final's lighting system is pretty interesting. The game probably could have run at a steady 60 FPS if they didn't force per-pixel lighting, and it'd look less shiny which a lot of people might have enjoyed.

sa1dx is worse in basically every way. even if you mod the pc port to resemble dreamcast, you'll never get the sa1 chao system back.

sa2b has missing lighting, missing big the cat in levels and missing a shitload of 2 player costumes. however it added chao karate, chao stats on chao pickup, more rouge boob polys and heavily expanded the 2 player mode.
