I like Mario 64. Is this version worth checking out? It sounds like it would be. Would playing it on a 3ds with a circlepad be good?
>>
Better than normal SM64, unless you find Luigi being OP egregious.

People complain about the D-pad controls but I got all 160 stars playing on my DS Lite without a problem. I guess there's an analog hack for 3DS but it's not completely necessary.

The DS version is what a remake should be, more characters, more content, new minigames and features, it may not exactly be the same identical product to the N64 version but it has merit where it can stand on it's own ground.
>>
>>12558495
It's crap they butchered the gameplay

The physic is off ,the levels are smaller, the new stars are trash...

Geniunly one of the worst remake of all time

I think I'm going to play the real cart onba 3ds, so no patch. Would it be better to use the circlepad or dpad?
>>
>>12558660
Circlepad, the dpad doesn't work for a game in 3D.
>>
>>12558660
Don't play it it's shit
>>
>>12558691
How would I know if I haven't played it?

It's not shit. It's the definitive edition. I'm tired of pretending that the Super Mario Advance series is also not the definitive edition of those games. Console fags are so tiresome. Play the original vanilla version with touch screen analog controls, or buttons, or mod your 3DS to allow for analog movement with the circle pad if the touch screen fells off to you, or heck, even play the original N64 game ported to the 3DS in fully stereoscopic 3D (https://github.com/mkst/sm64-port/tree/3ds-port). Neither is shit.
>>
>>12558702
Play the original which is a masterpiece

This remake ruined the gameplay and not just because the D-pad that's actually the least of my problem
The wall jump was casualized, you can't chain anymore long jump+wall jump, the physics is worse the movement feel much much better in the original

God know the reason but the levels are significantly smaller too maybe the DS couldn't handle the big world of 64

Needing specific characters for certain stars is pure trash, backtracking in Mario 64 baby, the new content is mediocre at best
>>
>>12558717
It was a sloppy DS tech demo dude it isn't remotely "definitive". If it were the definitive edition it would have been the version they re-released in that 3-in-1 collection a few years ago for the switch.
>>
>>12558771
For me, it's how the remake turns Yoshi into the main character and Mario's only really needed for the Bowser stages.
>>
>>12558495
quite literally every change made is for the worse. try it for the novelty but b-dashing and character swapping without the god tier controls of the original will make you drop it before the basement
>>
>>12558717
why that unc wearing lipstick
>>
>>12558684
stop trolling, the circle pad functions as a dpad but slower to get the inputs on a ds game
>>
>>12558717
>the butchered handheld ports with dramatically worse visuals, sound and controls are actually the definitive versions
lmao
>>
Bump, this post is for the guy in a previous thread who said "nobody recommends shitty dumbed down handheld ports to everyone else!"
>>
>>12559058
yeah, we recommend good handheld ports to everyone else like mario advance 4, that's the difference
>>
>>12559009
>visuals
this is /vr/, back to
>>>/v/
>sound
no Nintendo first-party game has bad sound on GBA, that's just cheap SNES third-party games
>controls
exactly how? on GBA no game needs more than a d-pad plus ABLR... or are you one of those retards that think that Super Metroid controls better than Zero Mission/Fusion? on DS anons already told you how to play the definitive edition: play on a 3DS with the analog patch for the content-complete definitive version
>>12559060
seriously, I can't understand how someone cant' see that SMA4 is the definitive Mario 3, cmon
>>
>>12559095
screen crunch is worse than just bad visuals, it makes the gameplay worse
>>
>>12558495
Not good for a first play but okay for a replay. Not like Diddy Kong Racing DS which is complete trash.
>>
If someone want to see how much smaller the levels are on DS

Go to tiny huge island ,the small world ,grab the tree at the start and try to jump to the upper part of the level

You can access it on the DS version but you can't in the original ,too far away
>>
the ds version violates the spirit of the original game. super mario 64 was designed around player driven flourishes, playing around with a dynamic movement system to be more stylish. the dpad controls of the ds version just aren't up to the task, they're too unwieldy and laborious for that playfulness to feel natural.
tldr if you want to play the most painstaking cautious version of mario 64 then sure give mario 64 a try.
>>
>>12558495
It's the only version I have played. It was fun from what I remember. A whole n64 game on handheld. Imagine that.

mario's handling was changed for 64 to be more conducive to the dpad so you're overlaying one change onto another. probably better to just play the pc port.
>>
>>12559353
And that’s why, anons, you should always play your games on the original intended hardware, with the original intended speakers. Same about muh muted colors.

Fuck no it isn't, the controls are poop and weren't designed with circlepad in mind.

Is playing on an official AGS-101 SP the wrong way to play GBA games?

if the game released before the AGS-101 SP, actually yes, it is
