>Gamecube had online capabilities
Why did it go vastly underutilized compared to PS2 or Xbox or even Dreamcast?
>>
>vastly underutilized
That's a good thing. Fuck online.
>>
no one played online on the ps2 either

Having four controller ports is a surefire way to make sure 75% of people don't buy your console.

I always wondered that too. The Gamecube had a broadband adapter, so why did devs rip out the online capabilities from games like TimeSplitters and SSX 3 while leaving it in on PS2 and Xbox?
>>

In the first world we did

final fantasy 11 was a big deal on ps2. it required a hard drive not just internet.
>>
>>12558952
No it wasn't. Nobody played it on PS2. Most normalfags think X-2 is XI

Final Fantasy 11 was insanely popular for a time. It still is but obviously not as big as it was back in the early 2000s.

the ps2 servers were up until 2016 and only shut down because sony stopped providing warranty on dev kits

Xbox and Dreamcast both shipped with an online adapter on every console, and both platform holders provided a centralized infrastructure and support to developers for online functionality, though Xbox did take a while to get Xbox Live running
PS2 is a more complicated affair as early on there was a whole mess of third party online options for both software and hardware until Sony shipped an official solution for both hardware and eventually infrastructure and software. Over the course of a few years the PS2 went from third party USB dial up modems that were only supported by a few games to PS2 slim consoles shipping with ethernet built-in that would connect to Sony hosted servers.
Here's an example of just how hyped people were to go online with their PS2: a third party PS2 disc that contains a web browser and email client compatible with third party modems, launched before the official PS2 online adapter.
Meanwhile on the Gamecube the hardware for online was an expensive first-party exclusive additional accessory, and Nintendo provided absolutely no infrastructure support for it.

No, we didn't.

Nintendo seemed scared of online. Probably too afraid they couldn't control the environment and there'd be too many cheaters and pedos. In the next gen their online environment was a lot more restricted compared to the competition.

There had to me more than one Gamecube owner in the world to make it worthwhile
