Saw a Nintendo 64DD up for auction in Japan.
Never seen one in person before.
Was this thing actually rare, or just another failed Nintendo add-on?

A lot of people will tell you it "failed" but in reality it was never really meant to succeed, at least not in the state it ended up releasing in. The short version of the story is Nintendo kept delaying it for absolutely no reason, it was supposed to come out within a year of N64s launch. Almost everyone making N64 games had games and expansion packs for it in the pipeline at some point, but Nintendo kept saying there weren't enough games ready for it so they would push the release date back. But since the release got delayed, devs delayed their games in return. It then became a feedback loop of Nintendo delaying the system because no games and devs delaying their games because no system. Even Nintendos own devs got sick of waiting for it which is why OoT got released on a cartridge when it was supposed to be a DD game.

They finally released it in December 99, but the only reason it came out at all was because they had already manufactured a bunch of them, had some games already done, and they were just sitting around in a warehouse. You had to fill out a mail order form to even buy one and the purchase included all of the games they had already made for it sent to you each month until you got them all. There's like 10-15,000 of them out there, it's pretty much all they made. The only reason the thing was a failure is because they sat on it for way too long and fucked over everyone that was making stuff for it, if they had just released it on time it probably would've been a different story.

I think the contract with the online server provider forced them to release it too.

If this is the case, why are some DD games so much more expensive than others?

Some games are in much higher demand than others. Collectors love the toddler pissing game, so it's really expensive.

You're right, my mistake. All but 2 games were included, those being Doshin 2 and Japan Pro Golf Tour 64. Those 2 were sold separately and had to be purchased exclusively via the Randnet online service which is why they are exceedingly rare.

That's a retail box which I think is much rarer than the Randnet kit. Legitimately a holy grail for N64 collectors.
