The best shmup is Eschatos, actually.
But the best /vr/ shmup? Yeah, probably this one. Space Megaforce deserves a mention too.

Never played but the more I play the original Gradius, the more I like it. Incredibly fun once you master it. The entire being built around a 1LC thing is much more palatable if you just accept it for what it is: a fast paced space battle against impossible odds. The cover art illustrates exactly what the game really is.

Great atmosphere and music. It is a cave game so it is easy until stage 4 which has a massive difficulty spike. Personally I prefer it over Dodonpachi
