I played through the original wario land recently, and started playing wario land 2. I really enjoyed the original game, and while the wario land 2 is growing on me the more I play it, I'm not enjoying it as much as the original. Why did they change the formula so much?

They changed the formula a ton with each game. I'd say 4 is closest to 1 in terms of design, I'd find it hard to imagine someone would enjoy 1 and not like 4 even more.
