Fester's Quest is probably the most definitive kusoge from Sunsoft's library. The combat, movement, and exploration are nothing to write home about. It's not too surprising that this never released in Japan and received a difficulty nerf in Europe.

Early Sunsoft was. The original Famicom team was fired and replaced with the team that made Batman, Blaster Master, etc.

There were shitloads of TV ads when it released to market it as that and to hype that up as a good thing.They just likely didn't have the resources to do the same ad campaign in Japan or Europe, and without those ads explaining why it's so hard it would just come off as a shitty game.
