Alright, for the anons who told me I would love DQ2 after playing the original game...
YOU WERE RIGHT
What a fantastic sequel, improves on everything.
The way the game opens up once you get the ship and go around the mapamundi is just so greter-than-life. Imagine playing this in 1987 less than a year since DQ1 lmao.
Oh, I played the american version however, Dragon Warrior II. Anyone know if there's any big difference with the original game other than the fukkatsu no jumon?
I'm going to miss this game, so I'm wondering if next time I play it I should go for the original Famicom version, if there's anything actually different from DW2, or if I should just go ahead with the remake of I&II for SFC.
I also already played III years ago, so with this I conclude the Loto trilogy and I must say: yeah, no wonder this series is so beloved. These games are special.
BTW the endgame was difficult but I had more trouble in the mid game, got lost and stuck a lot.
Also, what's the deal with the 3 bosses before Hargon? Atlas and the other 2. I beat them on first try, but then immediately lost to Hargon first, then when I went back, the bosses weren't there anymore. Then I lost again, this time against Malroth, and when I went back, Atlas and the others were there again. Maybe it's because I exited the Rhone map? (To go search a leaf of life tree)

It also has a pretty awesome shining effect every 8 seconds or so.
Also posting the final boss because I thought it looked absolutely badass

I thought they only respawned if you reset your console but exiting Rhone might also do that

The US NES version has:
>some mild censoring, priests, crosses, and churches
As an European I actually LIKE the religious censoring. I'm not a religious person, but in my country it's literally impossible to go anywhere without seeing crosses like this everywhere on the side of roads. So when I see a cross in DQ it instantly reminds me of that and destroy my immersion. With that said I think the way DQ8 handheld things is best.
>saves instead of password
>added intro that shows more regarding Moonbroke
>some enemy stats differ to make things a bit easier but not a long and most of the difference is marginal at best
>some enemies yield more exp and gold, mostly at the start and in the mid game
>some bugfixes, most of which are undocumented
old Famitsu issues will show you lot's of bugs in the game that are virtually unknown in the west so I'm assuming most of them were fixed

The SNES versions make a ton of subtle changes to the gameplay and make things a LOT easier, most of which are undocumented as well, as a random example enemy had their magic resistance divided into more groups, rather than more general resistance, and also lowered, which renders spells like Sleep or the mute spell really OP in that version. With that said the art direction is really nice.

Ah well it seems it's mostly the same game then, maybe some day I will play the original FC one but next time I play 1 and 2 it will be SFC for sure.
Another thing that puzzled me: at what level did you get something from that one girl NPC that's behind a silver door in Midenhall castle? She kept saying "you're still inexperienced come back later". I talked to her at level 35 and she still said that.
BTW i beat the game with the following levels:
Midenhall prince: 36
Cannock prince: 33
Moonbroke princess: 27
And I equipped midenhall prince wirh the Sword of Destruction and Evil Shield, and Cannock prince with the gremlin armor. Got these cursed items from random enemy drops, but only really equipped them for the final boss.

this girl? sounds to me like a translation error, I asked you in the last thread why you were wasting your time playing an english translation.
>>
>>12562394
Oh I see, strange dialog, can't tell if it's a joke about the girl flirting with a younger boy, or if it's more of a "come back to the castle if you're having trouble" type of NPC advice, I'm leaning more toward the former, in which case yeah this was lost in translation (maybe on purpose?)
I didn't play the original FC because I knew graphics were all the same (unlike DQ1) and had an extra cutscene at the start, but I might play the original sometime.
I'll play it in japanese when I play the SFC remake.
Oh another thing, I never knew what the Echoing flute was for, I found all the crests on my own, following NPC tips or my own intuition, now after finishing the game I look it up and learned that it helps you find them
>>
>>12562408
>(maybe on purpose?)
you said the english reads "come back when youre stronger" which might imply the translators misread つらくなったら as つよくなったら
>>
>>12562413
IIRC the actual text was something like "hero is still inexperienced, come back when in need".
Since they used the specific word "inexperienced", I supposed it was talking about actual leveling.

By the way, being friends with the Dragonlord's grandson was a nice touch!
But it made me think... What's the relation between Zoma and Baramos from DQIII and the Dragonlord?
And how do Hargon and Malroth fit in within the lore?
>>
>>12562418
Baramos is Zoma's top minion. Dragonlord is the dead Dragon Queen's son gone bad. Hargon is just some random priest who worships Hargon. None of them have any connections with each other, no matter what any retcons claim
>>
>>12562445
*worships Malroth
>>
>>12562445
>Dragonlord is the dead Dragon Queen's son gone bad
That's interesting, was this in the remake?
Malroth is a demon? Hargon mentions he comes from somewhere, like a night/dark realm, can't remember the specific name he said.
Also, this is unrelated to DQ but I was thinking about starting another NES RPG now and instead of DQ I was thinking Final Fantasy 1, which also came out in 1987. Again, is there a lot of differences between FC and NES?
>>
Oh yeah also, who wad Rubiss? Some human wizard who trascended life?
>>
>>12562482
It's more vague in the original game, but the Super Famicom remake pretty much confirms it when you go back to the Queen's egg in post-game and are told it hatched and fled to the world below. To clarify, I'm against the retcons of the HD2D remakes that tries to tie all the villains together for some inane reason.
>>
>>12562496
Oh, I see, thanks, so there's extra story in the SFC remake, but then they also added more to the new HD remakes too.
I think it's good that there's no relation between Dragonlord and Hargon, since the Dragonlord's grandson specifically says he's against Hargon too.
It reminded me of how Piccolo Jr is different/not evil as his father.
