Sega went through a lot of different prototypes for the successor to the Saturn before the landed on the Dreamcast. In 1995, there was a collaboration between Sega and Nvidia to develop the chipset for the Saturn II. There was project Black belt, which was the PowerPC machine with a 3DFX voodoo chipset. Dreamcast was known as Project Katana. Which is the Sega of Japan produced SH4/ PowerVR machine. Plus on top of that, there was a proposed enhancement cart for the Saturn that was planned for Virtua Fighter 3.

The Saturn was not capable of delivering a good 3D Sonic game. This is a fact.

I say this as a former Saturn owner and lifelong Sega fan who exited the console market for good when the Dreamcast died.

Saturn could have delivered the ultimate side-scrolling 2D or even 2.5D Sonic platformer. But it didn't have the power for an intricate fast-paced 3D platformer.

Yes I am aware of Sonic R. I used to own it. I stand by what I said.
