What was up with Japanese devs and not putting their names in the credits until MUCH later? Most of the lesser-known devs don't even credit themselves, let alone put fake names on the credits. (Most of the time it's likely because they're subcontractors, but still.)
Company don't want competitors stealing their employee
>>12564197I'm surprised a few Japs didn't start their own Activisions, but I suppose that's not what Japanese culture is all about.
They didn't care about recognition, they just wanted to make good games that people liked.
>>12564203What about that Kojima dude? He's probably the closest I could think of to someone like a Japanese David Crane or something.
>>12564207I like Kojimbo's games, but every rule has a few exceptions.
>>12564213Considering Kojima's been fucked over twice during the NES era, I can easily see why he'd want to put his name out there.
>>12564193The companies at the time claimed they wanted to keep their staff unknown so other companies couldn't poach them, but ultimately it was done to undermine their staff's career mobility and resumes so as to keep as many people stuck with the companies and with as little pay as possible.
>>12565175So that whole nip salaryman culture thing in play?
>>12565175Same thing?
I read (on this board) that game development wasn't a career to be proud of in 1980s and early 1990s Japan.
>>12565175While this makes sense in theory, the reality is that games didn't have to have credits at all (and a lot didn't), so if it really were an effort to keep identities a secret for business management reasons, the bosses could have just forbid the inclusion of credits altogether. It wasn't exactly unusual for games to have no credits at all, so it wasn't like it was mandatory or that devs would feel any less screwed over by no credits vs "you can have credits but you have to use pseudonyms." Maybe they just thought it was fun to use made up names, or they were young/immature enough to ignore the importance of having some sort of meaningful name stamped on your creative product, even if it were in a place that only a small fraction of users would ever see (granted, even a silly penname is better than nothing, because it is something that can be tied to you).
>>12565764watch the first 10 seconds of the opening of Dragon Quest 4 (1990) then come back and tell me they werent proud of the game they made.
>>12565870Yeah. The OP pic is actually an example of that, the credit roll there is just a spoof roll, not pseudonyms.
>>12564217QRD?
>>12566060Okay, so basically Konami ported the first Metal Gear behind Kojima's back... except they half-assed it because you fight a giant computer LMAO. And to make matters worse, Kojima found out Konami was making a sequel to NES Metal Gear from a fan of Kojima during a train ride.
