How does someone get started with fighting games? What are some good beginner-friendly /vr/ fighting games that I should try out first?

Just go through Arcade mode with every character. Some of them will click better than others. When you have a favorite, learn some of their combos.
Tekken is a good series to start with since you get some videos after beating it with each character and it gives them all a lot of personality. Just don't become an Eddy Gordo player.

SF2CE and Samsho 2 are pretty down-to-basics brass-tacks 2D fighters

The soulcalibur fighting games including soul edge have rich single player modes

They're fun but not very skill based.

True but for a beginner or those bad at fighting games, like me, it can be a lot of fun

You can’t. Getting good at fighting games is the “you can’t learn Japanese” of video games. Especially if it’s an old fighting game that got “solved” long ago. Don’t bother competing at KoF games with thirdies, you won’t win. Now, if you just want to play and have fun. Just pick a game, learn a few moves or button mash against the AI like we scrubs do. I prefer SNK fighters, but Capcom is fine too.

Killer Instinct on snes is fun and pretty easy and has lots of combos and stuff like the more modern fighting games

This pussy is afraid of any challenge that requires hard work

Unironically modern fighting games have tons of tools and info compared to the older games. Older fighting games throw you in the deep end without a manual.

The fundamentals you learn from SF2 will apply to tons of other games. It’s the codex of the genre.

This.
Also, if you main King, you will make everyone you play against seethe uncontrollably. You will make them seethe even if you mention over the internet that you play King.

From my understanding, SF2, Tekken (starting with 3, 1 and 2 kinda suck) and maybe KoF. Thing about FGs is that you may very well beat many of them without having used many of their mechanics or having learned a full moveset, so more than beating one you should focus on learning one I suppose.

you get raped by the input buffer.

I really like Melty Blood Act Cadenza and Actress Again on the ps2. Easy to pick up, music is the best I've ever heard in a fighting game.

Play that one. I started just by playing vanilla SNES street fighter. I don't really play fighting games that much but that one is cool I guess. Maybe pick one character and try to master their moveset.
