What was the hype for Twilight Princess like 20 years ago?
>>
>>12564480
It was insane. We were finally getting a darker, serious Zelda after the N64. Then it was the worst 3D game in the series.
>>
We had a meltdown on /v/ when IGN gave it an 8.8 instead of 10
>>
>>12564480
Hopes and dreams = delivered. Best Zelda until BOTW came.
>>
By the time this came out I'd stopped buying consoles entirely.
>>

I was active on the Gamespot forums and people did not take it well. 8.8 was kind of the beginning of the end for the Gamespot forum. It led to fairly large exodus of users and then the Kane and Lynch firing killed it completely.

I had a DVD with the first trailer on it that I got with a magazine and would watch it over and over, I was insanely excited for it. I still didn't have internet access at the time so whenever I was around a Gamestop I would pop in to ask when it was coming out. I remember when it was still slated for a late 2005 release but then it became something like March 2006 one of the times I asked, and then the time after that they started telling me about the Wii and how it was coming out for that instead. They weren't even sure if the Gamecube version was happening anymore. By the time it finally came out I still wasn't even really sure what the deal with the Wii was, plus it was impossible to actually get, so I stuck with the Gamecube version.

I got stuck on the tears of light section in Kakariko Village and already wasn't really enjoying the game so I just ended up dropping it. I was really disappointed. A few years later, 2008 or so, I finally got a Wii and picked the game up a second time to check out the motion controls. I expected it to play how Skyward Sword plays with 1 to 1 sword swinging but that wasn't the case and so I was even more disappointed than I already was. However the actual game itself ended up clicking with me a lot more that time and I really enjoyed it, it's one of my favorite games now. It's a shame it's so bogged down with pacing issues, in a lot of ways it's one of the best Zelda games, you just have to push past some dull moments to get to the gold. Playing the new PC port right now and loving how smooth it is, and the optional QoL stuff should improve the few shortcomings it has.

so a forum died because it didn't shill a game like its users wanted?
and then after-the-fact was vindicated, or even proven to have been *too* soft in fact?
>>
>>12564489
Jeff Gertsman was based. He gave it a completely fair score it was a good game just not the second coming of Christ like all the Nintendo soys wanted you to believe.
>>
>>12564480
It was hilarious. Nintendies finally though they were darker and more mature.
>>
>>12564480
Back when it was new people made fun of Midna and there was a meme image that was her going GOO GOO GA GA I TALK LIKE A RETARDED BABY
>>
>>12564480
It was a big deal. Ocarinafags had a melty over WW so Nintendo released a darker Ocarina clone to appease them and they all hated it.
>>
>>12564480
>Ganondorf has somehow returned
I just wanted pig Ganon again if it was gonna be him, not this shit.
>>
My brother is a Zelda fan and he loved it. I wanted to like it since it seemed dark and edgier but I lost interest with all the wolf shit.
I will say that it made the combat in WW seem simplistic and imprecise but I would still rather play WW
>>
>>12564829
>wolf shit

Nothing gayer than vampire and wolf romance

>so a forum died because it didn't shill a game like its users wanted?
It could be worse, it could've died becasue the database was shitting itself and the moderators couldn't fix it due to not having access to the code or a way to contact the owner, so they decided to delete user-uploaded content to free some space, which angered the users and led to an exodus.

the hype was real. all the ppl mad about WWs cartoon faggotry were super stoked.
and then it apparently came out. i never saw it, not even a copy in stores, and i never heard about it again.

E3 reaction: incredible and companies couldn't even pay for that reaction these days
Release: somehow even easier than windwaker, boring, visually ugly even through component, just go play PoP

Honestly just read the manga.
>>12564586
The fact he still whines about death threats and acts like such a crybaby over the fan reaction to his score all these years later undermines it a bit. Also 8.8 is still too high
>>
>>12564480
It's the last video game I remember being excited for

Zeldas announcement in 2004 created one of the most famous reaction memes ofnall times. This is back when it was journalists, not over-over-acting youtubers, and back when game journalists were actual gamers.
The whole world felt what these guy felt when from that zelda reveal. It was one of the most naturally hyped things in the history of gaming up to this point.

When I went to the Wii midnight launch I dont recall a singlenperson buying the console alone. Virtually everyone lined up that night walked away with zelda. It was the lone reason to buy a wii at launch. The waggle
Itbwas later on that wii sports for 60 year women and little kids drove subsequent console sales for Wii but the launch weekend was exclusively zelda fans.
>>
>>12565397
Sorry to be the one to tell you this bud but IGN told them to react like that, also Santa isn't real and babies don't come from the stork.
>>
>>12565431
Watch the actual E3 video, that was one of the loadest crowd pops of the 2000s, an it was all journalists.
>>
>>12565397
I bought it for both Zelda and motion controls. And I was right, the controls were really good.. for like 5 games.
>>
>>12564480
It was insane and then it got so so reviews and peoplebwent crazy snd a lot of people got fired, it was weird honestly. Probably one of the biggest controversies back in the day. I remember saving my money for it and i when saw reviews i skipped it, i was a barely a freshman in high school at the time so money for a game was big purchase. I did buy it used for like 20 bucks years later, and frankly 8.8 was probably too high, it has everything i ever wanted from a zelda game but none of it really comes together, also the opening is way way too fucking long.

After Wind Waker was controversial, this was one of the most hyped games of 2005 to say the least as a "return to form".
>>
I was super hyped for it. The hyper was super high. It was the Zelda everyone was waiting for. Never seen people go so crazy over a less than 9 review. In retrospect 8.8 was way too high.
>>
>>12566102
Every post OoT Zelda is rated way too high. Magazines everywhere gave Wind Waker 10's.
>>
Dunno why people are saying it got middling reviews, it didn't at all....IGN's famous 8.8 was the worst score it got anywhere.
Of course the hype was unreal, the 2004 reveal was a complete surprise that managed to stay secret until the end. Until that point, Aonuma and Miyamoto both maintained that they were still working on Wind Waker 2.
The hype carried over to players too, most people called it the best Zelda game of all time. It took years and people becoming more appreciative of Wind Waker around the time of the HD version for people to look back at TP and recognize it's flaws. I got it for my 11th birthday and was hyped beyond belief, and I bought in and said it was the best game ever made for years after. The truth is this though: >>12565537
It is the worst Zelda to replay.
>>
>>12564480
Bump. Never played the game but the story behind it is fascinating to me from what I'm reading here.
>>
Grown men were crying with joy. Stuff like the gaijin 4koma and 8.8 from Gamespot are still referenced, even by people who weren't around for the original event.
People who thought WW looked too 'kiddie' were creaming their jorts at a darker, moodier Zelda game.
The game came out and most fans were thrilled, since it was basically structured like OoT again in higher fidelity but this time your 'fairy' was a tsundere imp that people still fap to today.
It also hints at lore connections that we were going crazy for, long before Nintendo published their "official" timeline that inadvertently killed interest for a lot of folks. Stuff like the vague callbacks to MM and the Hero's Shade were tickling our 15-yr old imaginations.

Personally, I still like the game a lot, but I wish the earlier twilight sections were easier to go through quickly, or maybe the wolf form got some new tricks as the game went on.
The overworld looks cool, but there's not much in it to do outside of the scripted fights and the occasional gear-check for a heart piece.
It did have a lot of neat combat moves that expanded on WW's counterhits, and I wish they kept more of that stuff in subsequent games and refined it. If TP had more challenging enemies it would have the best combat in the series, but really only the darknuts actually push you to use all the moves.
TP also probably has the best fishing hole in the series, which isn't saying much admittedly.

It was great
Back then the site had an actual culture and people were making original content instead of just frogs and jaks
>>
>>12564480
insane because they released a badass trailer

I was in Japan during Wii's launch, TP posters were everywhere. I want to go back.
>>
>>12564480
Every Zelda game has hype.

But let's say people bought the Camecube or Wii just to play that game, the same with Halo 3 for Xbox 360 at that time.
>>
>>12567856
Wind Waker and any Toon Link game had no hype
