>get to the AI computer
>hack into it
>have maxed Computer skill
>fail combat with enemy IC 4 times in a row
>game over
I just lost to the final boss of a game literally due to random chance... fuck this

The difference in quality and depth between the Genesis and SNES hacking segments is amazing. It's like comparing a dog to dog shit.
>>
i love this game but the matrix stuff sucks so much ass and theres way too much of it. completely brainless, you just move in a straight line. what were they thinking
>>
>>12565259
especially given that the genesis matrix is 100% optional. you NEVER have to do it, and yet its so complex it is essentially an entire nother game.

>enemies get fully automatic versions of the most powerful guns in the game
>(You) can only get the semi-auto versions
and most of the best Shadowrunners are the mages who can't equip any armor except the very first armor you find in the game that sucks and only one exists, so they get annihilated by 11+ damage shots from 4+ enemies firing fully-automatic weapons. oh and all defensive spells wear off if you move to another screen.

the R in RPG stands for RNG

I love this game but some of its systems are pure trash. You mostly just play it for the cool setting, music and atmosphere.

Computer skill?
>>
>>12566348
The Skill in the game called "Computers" that you can level up to 6 which is the max.
>>
>>12565228
play Neuromancer game instead
>>
>>12565228
ALL YOU HAD TO DO IS LOG OUT AND TRY AGAIN. POINTLESS DEATH.
>>
>>12566393
>this isn't really important
I agree, the hacking is just a minigame you can beat without any foreknowledge aside from the rules
>>
>>12566494
You know, I don't even think the computer skill does anything. It simply is an artificial number you need because some computers won't let you hack them without meeting this threshold.
>>
>>12566315
Literally true. Google the lead designer of the SNES game. Check out "her" youtube channel.

From gamefags:
>The Computer skill enhances your performance in the Matrix. Specifically, the Computer stat:
>- Only determines your accuracy when attacking ICs
>- Does not have any effect on the damage you receive when walking into ICs
>- Does not have any effect on the damage you receive when attacks fail against ICs
>- Does not have any effect on the damage you inflict when attacking an empty square (this is always 1 HP)
>The Computer stat works as follows:
>IC Attack Accuracy % = Computer / 7
>In other words, each level of Computer increasing your chances of killing an IC
by about 14%. Since this stat maxes at 6, you can never achieve a 100% accuracy rate -- the best you can ever do is 86%. If you use PAR or GG to cheat the stat to 7, you will hit 100% of the time. If you cheat to set it to zero, you will never hit an IC.
>The IC's have different levels of attack power in the different Matrix sections
that you enter. There are eight different types of ICs, with the difference between each being its attack power (see "The Matrix and ICs" section for more).
>The Computer skill becomes one of the most valuable skills later in the game.
During the Drake Volcano and Aneki Tower, the Matrix ICs begin causing
considerably more damage than any enemy fighting. The Computer skill isn't
that difficult to boost, but it is absolutely vital in helping your chances of survival. Be sure to get this skill up to 6 before entering the Drake Tower.

So I had a 0.038% chance at missing 4 times in a row at fighting an IC and it still happened on the final computer to hack. It's like God telling me I'm not meant to finish this game.

Has anyone played it with the mouse hack, being a pointer game on a dpad is the only thing that makes me not recommend it
>>
>>12567362
Yes I have tried it and I actually switched back to using dpad because it was not very good.
The mouse is not precisely accurate and in situations where you need to move and shoot this is not good. You also cannot do certain actions at all meaning you will have to use dpad anyway, but switching between dpad and mouse seems to cause some kind of delay where you can't do anything at all for a few seconds. Very bad and not good.

I don't miss anything not using it, the game takes nothing to play with dpad and I have never asked myself 'why can't i use a mouse!!!'

It's just not needed and the people praising it have never evenplayed the patch.
>>
>>12567380
yeah its neat but i dont feel the need to do it. id rather play with a controller than have to have my left hand on a keyboard for this game. your reticle is sticky so its not like you need constant fast twitch mouse during combat.

Protip for dealing with Tar Paper and Tar Pit:
Only bother to max out your attack program and bypass program, keep the rest at low level or level 1. When approaching an IC, do a scan. If you don't hit TP, then bypass. Once you hit TP, the alarm has begun. Kiss your scan program goodbye and smash through. Then for your first move on new IC's, use one of your BS level 1 programs. That way if it's TP, you don't lose your attack program. With some bad RNG you might run out of garbage to sacrifice before you can turn off the alarm and find what you need, or fail to reach the CPU before the trace completes and you get kicked out, but this strategy usually works and is unstoppable on medium difficulty and below systems.
>>
>>12565228
This game in general nosedives around the part where you get on the boat onwards honestly. Everything after that point feels like half-baked bullshit.
>>
>>12565228
I was unable to complete it till ages later when I emulated it with save states. Neat game. Combat blows. Glad Shadorun Returns did a new version of the combat track "Null Sheen".

>I just lost to the final boss of a game literally due to random chance... fuck this
If you think that's bad don't ever try playing the SaGa series lol.
>>
>>12567380
well I mean I won't use it if it's bad, but if it had a PC port with a passable mouse interface I'd have been playing that since the '90s. It's a point and click game. The mouse hook hacks in first person playstation games work insanely well to the point it feels like I'm playing some late '90s PC game.
