>famous for being a mostly gimmick computer chess game with cool battle animations
>the only console port was this NES one by Beam Software, probably based off the Apple II/C64 code base
>the animations are so slow to get through it will drive you nuts
To be fair it was worse on the C64 due to about 8 seconds of disk access for each battle animation. The game is really better played on any of the 16-bit computer versions, the 8-bit ones don't quite cut it.

no Mega Drive port? would have been fairly trivial to port the Amiga version to it.

This is a perfect example of a game being one of the most famous games of its era while also entirely forgotten today.

If you had a computer in the late 80's early 90's, you've played this game. It's that simple.

as he said, it's a total tech demo gimmick and beyond that it's just another computer chess game so there's zero reason to play it today

Yep, that's the first way I ever played chess, on a 5170.

I played GNU Chess on Windows 3.11. That has a later 32-bit version so you can play it on modern Windows. Might run kinda fast though.

There was one other NES chess game, The Chessmaster which was also a port from the C64.

There's probably some loser out there who collects these old ass chess games for every retro system and makes a point of beating them on the hardest difficulty.
Couldn't be me, haha...

the Mexican Runner beat this in i think 22 minutes but he turned off the battle animations. lame.

I wonder if some Japanese guy collects shogi and Mahjong games and does same?

Chessmaster was the legit challenging chess engine, it didnt compare high hend dedicated purpose built chess computers and some ofnthe more expensive engines, but it did sell 5 million copies over the years.

Battlechess is just a very beginner friendly chess videogame. Battlechess 4000 was a bit tougher but still nothing compared to chessmaster.

>runs a chess AI on 128 bytes of RAM
I've always been fascinated by Video Chess
