I liked it. Atmosphere is great like in most From Soft games. Gameplay is fairly standard survival horror. There’s nothing amazing about it, but it’s serviceable. What’s filtering you, exactly? Do you dislike the way it controls?

the stupid combat and the enemies grabbing me instead of just slashing

You can avoid some combat by walking and turning off your lantern, iirc. Use your melee weapon for the small, weak faggots. Use some of your ranged spells for bigger enemies. Save your strongest ones (summons) for bosses. That’s how I remember getting through it. Mechanically, it’s never going to improve. You either like these types of games or you don’t.
