The dark age of the jrpg
Honestly CD firmat ruined the genre.Loading times and random encounters don't go well together.Plus, overly long attack animations and sluggish menuing
>dark alliance >jrpg ???
>>12566292Nocturne shits all over SMT 1-2-if and all the spin offs though
>>12566316>You can only pick from fixed characters rather than rolling your own stats>Game is linear>No real roleplaying opportunitiesIt's a western-made JRPG.
>>12566301Yup. 16 bit cartridge RPGs were the sweet spot. Not as punishing and inscrutable as 8 bit RPGs but far breezier and less bloated than everything they came after.
>>12566292>P4Not retro>Dark Alliance>ChampionsNot JRPGs
>>12566292half of these are great. op, you're just gay.
>>12566329every ps2 game is retro
>>12566292Rogue Galaxy is awesome, I feel sorry for you if you can't enjoy an adventure
>>12566351Sticky says otherwise
yall niggas replying to a youtube thumbnail thread
>>12566292Half are great games and the rest aren't too shabby
>>12566292dark age how?almost all of that is superior to modern rpgs.
>>12566292Grandia 2 and FFX are awesome Xenosaga isn't bad either
>>12566301>Honestly CD firmat ruined the genreActually J-RPG only became great with the PS1
>>12566767Grandia 2 fucking sucks. I just played both 1 and 2 for the first time last year. I absolutely fell in love with the first one, it really reminded me of why I enjoy JRPGs in the first place and gave me a feeling of magic and whimsy I hadn't felt since I first got into the genre over 20 years ago. After I finished it I quickly booted up 2, I was really excited especially since it was a Dreamcast game my favorite system. The story is abhorrently boring and generic, the first game doesn't have a masterpiece story either but the characters were incredibly likable and charming and the places it takes you really felt like an adventure. In Grandia 2 all you do is go from town to town, solve a problem which always only involves going into the nearby dungeon and beating the boss, and you just repeat that until it eventually unceremoniously ends. Nowhere you go looks visually interesting or has any real theming to it, it's all pretty lame. The music is such a let down too, the first game has one of the greatest soundtracks of all time but I can't remember a single song from 2. The only nice thing I can say about it is that it looks decent for the time and I liked that some of the battle animations smoothly transitioned into 2D anime scenes. Grandia 1 is the only good game in this franchise and it's a real shame.
>>12566292The downgrade from PS1 J-RPG is astonishingAlmost every PS1 J-RPG franchise were significantly worse on PS2FF12 is geniunly one of the worst game i have ever played
>>12566292>The dark age of the jrpgnah that's the ps3 era
At this point I have probably played close to 200 different RPGs, 98% of them being from the 80's and 90's. The 00's is where I draw the line. The only exception are DQ8 (great) and Metal Saga (shit combat due to the awful level scaling).I have played every FF game from 1 to 9 multiple times but I know I will never play 10 or anything after. Or maybe in 30 years when I've exhausted all possibilities and by that point things might have gotten so bad the 6th gen will look like gold by comparison. And every time I engage with fans of RPGs from the 6th gen and beyond and I start to critizice the gameplay, I always find the same retarded statement "Who cares about the gameplay, it's an RPG". This says a lot. I wouldn't complain if they kept to themselves but these are the most people who will play Fisher Price editions re-releases of old games to tell themselves they're le knowledgeable hardcore gamer for (supposedly) playing said old game, and will recommend the Fisher Price Editions to others because "they cut on the grinding!"I'm self conscious enough to post this picture
>>12566781I agree Grandia (1) is great, I had a similar feeling playing it for the first time last year. You should check out Digital Museum if you haven't.I didn't play 2 because all I had to do was look at the release date and a few screenshots to know it'd be shit.
This board opinion is pure garbage as usual.>>12566292Dark age was the snes. Almost triple more power than the nes and it could only deliver generic copy paste garbage.>>12566301>Honestly CD firmat ruined the genre. The cd format saved the genre since it is pretty important for a story heavy genre, which jrpg's are. Go make parasite eve/ff7 on a cartridge, thought so. It would look like a generic snes jrpg.>>12566327Nothing you listed defines anything as a jrpg. Jrpg's have specific gameplay styles and dark alliance fits under the arpg umbrella.>>12566328>Yup. 16 bit cartridge RPGs were the sweet spot.Ah yes, i enjoy copypaste rpg#15120.>>12566785>Almost every PS1 J-RPG franchise were significantly worse on PS2Cost increased a lot and Sony did everything to cull non aaa games development.>>12566840>The only exception are DQ8 (great)Dq8 is one of the worst dq games. Too easy, pacing is atrocious and the gameplay has typical level 5 balance problems.
>>12566292I haven't played all of these so I want to askDo any of these games feature an actual overworld?
>>12566871Dragon Quest 8 and Wild Arms 3 have one at least.
Japanese agreed too about the decline 10 J-RPG for the PS16 J-RPG for the PS2PS1 J-RPG are also generally ranked higher
>>12566292coincidentally the golden age of crpgs at the same time
>>12566328>Not as punishing and inscrutable as 8 bit RPGst. played some dragon quests and final fantasies and thinks that's the sum total of fc rpgs>far breezier and less bloated than everything they came afterlmao, you still have 2 minute long cutscenes and moments where you wander around towns not knowing where to go
>>12566840>wouldn't complain if they kept to themselves but these are the most people who will play Fisher Price editions re-releases of old games to tell themselves they're le knowledgeable hardcore gamer for (supposedly) playing said old gamedawn of souls is infinitely better than ff1 so shut the fuck up
>>12566884>coincidentally the golden age of crpgs at the same timeHum not really Golden age western RPG is 1997-2000 (Fallout 1-2, Baldur's Gate 1-2-Planescape torment...)
>>12566895Pure insecurity is what prompted you to make this post.
>>12566896>nwn>kotor>jade empire>morrowind>a bunch of diablo clonespeak of the genre. bg1 isn't even good btw and people have correctly sussed out that planescape is pretentious wank only playable with a guide open>>12566898pure annoyance at discovering how bad ff1 spikes in difficulty after you cross the bridge unless you spend an hour grinding and how bad black mage is. this is from a few days ago btw
>>12566301snappy combat/menus is imperative. same reason i can play dragon warrior on GBC and still have fun, in spite of it being the easiest version of the most barebones jarpig everone could argue that the CD allowed for more dense stories, which would ideally be an improvement. but id also argue that, for the most part, it usually isnt. the story oftentimes just becomes more overwrought
>>125667811 is greatthats a CD-based jarpig that actually took advantage of the extra space well2s no good thoon the flipside>In Grandia 2 all you do is go from town to town, solve a problem which always only involves going into the nearby dungeon and beating the boss, and you just repeat that until it eventually unceremoniously endsone game that, imo, actually did THAT good is DQ8. if done right, it almost feels like an episodic anime or something. pretty hard to keep interesting the whole way through tho
>>12566292you just realized that jrpgs have always been shit by the PS2 era
>>12566292What the fuck is that Kingdom Hearts cover?
I understand people who love 16bit RPGs because I do too especially as a 2D gaming chad, but I can't think of anything more performative than pretending to enjoy 8bit RPGs (outside of a handful exceptions) almost all of them are too archaic, too grindy, too cryptic, the stories and gameplay are too simple, the genre did not get nearly good 'til the 16 bit systems, outside of fewww exceptions, I understand wanting to be contrarian and performative but have standards, though I can't speak for PC RPGs from that area, I only tried Famicom stuff.
>>12566292>Rogue GalaxyThe writing kind of sucked and the humor fell flat but it was a really pretty game and had fun combat (except those shield enemies were super gay). Overall, I liked it>Wild Arms 3The "gems" you got for using magic made it fun to exploit monster weaknesses and find ways to one-shot them. The combat as a whole felt really good. The wild west vibe was really cool but sadly gets muscled out by sci-fi and anime tropes. I played through this whole game baked as hell and it was really fun, though it started to drag on later and the big bad guy being a demon loli made of brainwaves who comes out of nowhere and was secretly behind everything was pretty gay. I'm playing through the first game now and man, you go through a castle with a princess and kill everything with swords. The wild west theme must just be window dressing for this whole series>FFXLove this game, 10/10 kino from start to finish. Love Blitzball too
>>12566891>moments where you wander around towns not knowing where to goThat's an integral part of the gameplay, exploring and talking to the NPCs to learn what to do next
>>12566781Grandia 2 is great, it has a rotating party of interesting characters and fun combat. The antihero fighting a corrupt church plot is tense and satisfying, there's many climactic moments with more impact than the average jrpg, and every scene with Millennia is a treat.
>>12566327>western-made>jrpgThat's a wrpg at best. You know, because the W stands for WESTERN? Fucking ingrate.
>>12566292>ffx>star ocean 3>tales of the abyss>radiata stories>kingdom heartsthese were good but the rest were shit and even these series were better on ps1
>>12568264oh yeah and dq8 was good too.
>>12566327It's a diablo clone anon
>>12567747the difference is in a fc game that takes 5 seconds because there are 6 npcs in a town and the buildings are just glorified menus.
>>12566292I like this
