very few if any games have ever felt pretentious to me, outside of maybe Pathologicthe games people usually call pretentious are mostly just trying to do something more than 'move forward kill next bad guy', and that idea pisses them off because they're afraid of not getting it

I.e man vs nature man vs man, the usual russian authority criticism shtick, industrialism vs nature, mans and societys place regarding death. That sort of heavy dialogue is usual for adventure games and I think it is beautifully written personally.

The actual answer should be a post-Ogre Battle Yasumi Matsuno game. He had a sense of whimsy and fun with OB but then he was all pretentious fictional politics in somber ocre worlds. Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics are both really pretentious but I think FFT wins out since it tries to make a grand statement about religion on top of the lame politics.
