Have you beaten Super Mario Bros. without save-states?
>>
yeah, recently, no warps either
i got as far as bowser on the second loop, but his hammer bro lieutenant fucked me
>>
>>12568497
Nice!
>>
>>12568494
The first time I beat it was on a real NES when I was 8. I remember losing my shit and running around outside to tell everyone but I couldn't find anyone. kek
More recently I finished it on a single life without power ups and completed the full retroachievements set on hardcore. Then they deleted some of the cheevos and added some other ones and now it doesn't reflect that I did that, which makes me wonder why i even bothered.

Oh boy this thread again

Ok. It's not like this question will ever stop being relevant to /vr/ anyway.
>>

As a kid with warps, as an adult without warps
>>
>>12568494
nah but I've beaten deluxe on gbc, you can get used to the screen crunch.
>>
>>12568494
yes and I only needed the continue code a few times
>>
>>12568494

yes, just like every other non-retarded person who's played it
>>
>>12568494
I have beaten SMB2, SMB3, and many other games after but never the original SMB1.
>>
It took me six hours to get to world 8 in one sitting (with continues)
>>
On an original SMB cart the game preserved your high score if you reset the console but SMB/Duck Hunt wipes the RAM on reset so that doesn't work there.
>>
>>12568560
That's some impressive autism. I'm referring to you, of course, not the threads you linked.

>without save-states?
yes
>without warps and 90+ extra lives?
no
>>
>>12569406
This is the 19th time you've obsessively mentioned zoomers in a thread where they're not the subject matter
>>
>>12569415
NTA but the OP mentioning save states does prove what he is.

I did no save states, no warp, no death
>>

It took them changing the achievements for you to wonder why you even bothered? lmao @ your life
>>
Mario 1 is the easiest of the NES trilogy. If you can't beat it fair and square you shouldn't be allowed to play games.
>>
too repetitive, too simple, i prefer playing something actual worthwhile such as Pokemon or F.F.
>>
>>12569438
I thought RA was really cool when I first found out about it and I completed a bunch of sets for the most obvious games like SMB, then I stopped using it because it was sapping the fun. Many such cases.

Even with save states I got bored of this and couldn't finish it just cheap deaths all around not fun to play in modern times

If you can't react to it fairly then what's the fucking point it's just tedious

Yeah I used a game genie.

honest answer: i don't even remember. it is such a forgettable game if you played it as a kid
>>
>>12568494
As an oldfag I'm amused by younger people's reactions to SMB1 but I can understand why they think it's difficult. In the late 80s/early 90s, kids would gather around the TV and give each other tips about all of the hidden stuff, and that was how you learned to beat it. But to anyone just picking it up today, they're not getting any of that with the experience and it must just seem like some confusing esoteric game.
It's not talked about how important crowdsourcing information was back then.

This is it, right? This board will only get worse with time, right?
God, I wish the hack had killed this site permanently

I beat it for the first time ever, in 2025. With warps, without save states. I have yet to beat the "2nd Quest", though.

It was one of the most satisfying gaming achievements of my entire life. The difficulty curve is expertly crafted in SMB1. The first levels are easy as pie but the last ones are brutally unforgiving.
>>
>>12569607
Which retarded kid in your group required tips to beat SMB1
>>
>>12569608
It had ran its course. Just natural cycle of things.
>>
>>12569607
True, I love how these old games have secrets that you couldn't possibly be expected to find on your own, you were meant to consult with your friends to try and get info from that one guy who just randomly jumped into the air on level 8 or whatever and found a hidden mushroom there. That's a very soulful feature that's missing from modern games.
>>
>>12569612
SMB1 was the first platformer for most of us and the first vidya in general for at least half.
>>
>>12569563
cope however you want, pokemon has infinitely more depth and interesting mechanics than a game that just requires muscle memory and rote memorization, FYI A.I can't even beat the first pokemon game but it can easily beat the O.G mario since it's an overly simple and linear game where you just jump over enemies/pits and avoid touching them
>>
>>12569618
Yet still more of those boomer kids could beat it than grown adults with a lifetime of experience playing vidya today. The disparity in skill is staggering.
>>
>>12569615
>That's a very soulful feature that's missing from modern games.
The entire point of those "soulful" features were for you to buy nintendo power
>>
SMB was from the early Famicom era when ROM space was limited and games were just short simple reflex-driven stuff, the move to more complex games didn't come until a bit later.
>>
>>12569692
Yep, it is a known fact that Miyamoto was corrupt and inserted bad design in the game on purpose so that they could sell issues of Nintendo Power in the US.

Even though Nintendo Power didn't exist when they made the game and wouldn't for years. Neither did the NES. And nobody could even guess that they one day would.

Miyamoto truly was a visionnary.
>>
>>12569697
I never even saw a Nintendo Power in stores until maybe 1992. Vidya mags got a big boost in '93 with the Mortal Kombat congressional hearings and then Blockbuster carrying GamePros in all of their stores. But before that I never really saw them anywhere. People definitely overplay the Nintendo Power obscureshit thing.
However, the Nintendo hotline was definitely a thing and it was a 1-900 number so you had to pay to call them for help. I think people have somehow gotten the hotline confused with the magazine.
>>
>>12569697
>>12569715
*nippon version of nintendo power
>>
>>12569719
That makes more sense. I guess the hotline was just the US version since the magazines didn't have much distribution here.
>>
>>12569685
>depth and interesting mechanics
none of which are required to beat the game
>>
>>12569685
You're confusing generalized LLMs with an entirely different kind of AI trained on just the one game, which I'm not sure even exists for SMB1 but post a link if you have one.
>>
>>12568494

I just like having RA on because its hardcore mode is an easy anti-savestate/cheating proof.
I'm also weak willed so it helps force me to not even look at the option.
>>
>>12569438

Count yourself lucky. That site is saturated with faggots and third worlders.

Warpless without dying once
>>
I think the difficulty progression of smb1 is kind of crap for a limited continue approach, way too much of it centers on a single end of game spike with the proceeding levels being fairly trivial. basically how patient are you to keep replaying 95% of smb1's campaign just to get back to the hammer bros in 8-3. like that's fine once or twice, but more than that and it drags.
>>
>>12569767
also how much of that difficulty is the AI just biffing it at rpg world pathing. something you'd take for granted as a human being interminable for an AI.
