Which retro rpgs have the best combat?
>>
>>12570185
Persona 1
Pokemon
Dragon Quest
>>
>>12570185
Valbrace for the LX-II has pretty good combat if you consider it an RPG.
>>
>>12570365
that belongs in /v/ even though it fits the very definition of retro, but here retro just means old
>>
Super Mario RPG/Paper Mario
>>
>>12570185
Ys
Dragon Buster II
Crystalis
basically anything not turn-cringe
>>
>>12570503
>bump shit
Hell fucking no
>>
When I think great RPG combat I think DQ2.

It's amazing the amount of things they got right so early on and it's equally amazing how the vast majority of DQ clones and other games in the genre never even did half of what DQ2 did.

and what's sad is that most people probably don't even see it and are probably wondering wtf I'm even talking about.

The short version is good RPG combat is a mix between the expected and the unexpected and DQ2 has the perfect balance between the two to keep combat always engaging.
If you don't like the unexpected you shouldn't play RPGs but the genre leaned more and more towards reducing the unexpected as time goes on to the point that now you can find idiots saying "RNG = bad design" (shit like "misses in Secret of Mana = bad design")

having a horde of 4 Dragon Fly spawn, do a pre-emptive strike, and they all decide to do a fire breath attack is part of the fun

it's still better than waiting my turn
>>
megaman battle network
>>
>>12570185
puritanism (good)
>seventh saga
>gagharv trilogy
>lufia 2
>arcrise fantasia
>final fantasy 5

gimmick shit (good)
>paper mario
>ys series
>ATB slop (FF4, FF6)
>koudelka
>baten kaitos
>>
>>12570201
>Persona 1
Have you even played it? Game and combat was ass. Explain what even makes it good.
>>
>>12570754
I think after playing any Dragon Quest for a bit, my mind enters this state. I think things like "okay my boomerang will kill the first one, the second one I can finish with a quick attack, and the rest I can either let hit me or use a spell." You get such a feeling for that where I wouldn't say it's hard or easy, but you go into a flow state.
>>
>>12570783
>can't do shit just bump like a retard which is basically just auto combat
No it's fucking crap, everything is better than it
>>
>>12570405
UFOsoft released it in '88 dude
>>
>>12570405
go back
>>
>>12570185
Fallout 1. I always made builds around lazer weapons so it was always satisfying watching my enemies turn into dust.
>>
>>12570365
God I hate how you can immediately tell when something it's not retro but homebrew/indie game crap because of the art style, like why do they keep failing so hard to look like actual retro games all the time?
>>
>>12570965
In 20-30 years time that game will technically be retro by definition.
>>
Jagged Alliance 2

>4 colours plus transparecy
that's the only reason i can tell, the rest of it looks straight out of sugoro quest
>>
>>12570185
the snes era final fantasies have played pretty well for me because you can hold down a to get through random encounters
>>
>>12570754
i think that deciding whether or not to autobattle at the start of the encounter is more engaging, and dq2 is very slow anyway. besides, you literally cannot make any impactful decisions until you get the second hero
>>
>>12571034
I disagree, the art style in Sugoro Quest is your average 'cute anime - let's try to do like Dragon Quest' of the era; while there is something about that other game's art style which screams modern indie. That's without mentionning the resolution and HUD which are dead give aways as well.

pic rel for what an 8-bit action based dungeon crawler (I'm assuming the other game is action based) looked like
>>
>>12571034
Nah, this looks like a retro game
>>
File: images.jpg (17 KB, 232x217)

>>12571047
why, because it's made for a different aspect ratio? it really isn't that bad for something trying to ape a fc dungeon crawler
>pic rel for what an 8-bit action based dungeon crawler (I'm assuming the other game is action based) looked like
here's might and magic for the famicom. i think shining in the darkness looked like that too
>>
>>12571047
>>12571074
really not that bad
>>
>>12571073
yeah because it uses 4 colours, with one of them being black so the sprites merge with the background. other than that i don't think the ufo50 game looks that bad
>>
>>12570973
age does not determine retroness, tourist-kun
>>
>>12570185
earthbound. first strike and rolling hp meter are fun.
>>
>>12570965
Yeah indie games that use the retro style really do come off way different from actual old games. Even when they don't have more obvious things like particle effects, overly flowy movement, post-ironic self-aware dialogue, etc. you can also notice it with the art and music. I think with the art there's always a silly look to characters' faces that gives it away that the game was made post-Ren and Stimpy/post-Dreamworks face and as for the music they tend to mix those arpeggios from western games with the more eastern/Jap melodies so it sounds kinda out of place.
>>
>>12570793
NTA but I've beaten it twice and it's damn good. It's not SMT so the difficulty and dungeon complexity aren't as high but
>first person dungeon crawling allows for more interesting dungeon layouts
>party formation matters to an extent, shame they ditched the system in 2 instead of refining it
>Personas are large, look cool, and spells have great feedback
>unconventional elemental types but you aren't hard-locked into "hit enemy weakness" as a strategy
>weapons and guns are separate and each have their uses compared to just spamming spells
>two main story routes + extra dungeon, but also not super long, therefore very replayable
And that's not mentioning the sheer style of the game, or the fact that its fairly serious in tone and not otaku wish fulfillment despite having student protagonists. No dating bullshit or friendship mechanics.

Gothic
>inb4
>>
>>12571087
maybe on the planet retard where you obviously come from
>>
>>12571361
ps3 and 360 and everything that came after will never be retro. If you can't comprehend why, you're better off somewhere else, friendo.
