Rear projection? Looks like shit.
>>12571115I have vivid, early memories of playing TMNT II on the NES on one of these. I later had a friend who had one during the Wii era and it was dogshit.
>>12571115>mom's bf had a rear projection tv but we couldn't play games on it because it would "get damaged">brother and i somehow damaged the tv anyway without even plugging in our sega (i peeled up a corner the the screen that was taped down lol)>bf got pissed>mom got pissed at bf for getting pissed at us>mom punched bf in the head with a car key in between her fingers for a damage boost>we move out of bf's house>i stole all the beyblades he bought to bond with me and my brotheri carried the "games damage rear projection tvs" belief for ever and never gamed with one. i think maybe mom's bf was worried about the hud burning in something.
Instruction manuals back then literally told you never to play on these
>>12571417You sound like little shits for deliberately peeling off the screen.
>>12571417I was also told not to play video games on one because of a nebulous claim that doing so would "wreck" it.
>>12571440yes and the guy absolutely did not deserve to get a head wound over it. dude was just frustrated and yelled at us to knock it off, like literally any 20 something year old dude would do. it was his first time living with kids and a BPD mom (only time too as he an hero'd after).
>>12571115Right on
>>12571417Did your real Dad beat the shit out of the bf?
>>12571115I like how you post the shittiest possible picture to demonstrate. My family owned one and we used it for 10-15 years before it broke, it was my main gaming screen for the entirety of the 6th and 7th gen because my parents wouldn't let me game on the plasma screen due to burn-in risk. Playing PS3 and Xbox 360 with component video on one of these was surprisingly decent. I remember trying to game on my friends' cheap high-latency LCD screens every now and then and it was dogshit, my rear-projection was way better for gaming than their piece of shit LCDs in like 2007.
>>12571434That was because they got burn in easier than normal CRTs.
>>12571115even the picture looks like shit, but I really wanted one back in the day. The pictures made them look much clearer than they actually are.>>12571417my dad used to let me and my brothers get away with stupid shit all the time when we were kids. He was also a druggie, loser, single dad we were only allowed to visit on weekends once a month. He still sucks and I hate him.
>>12571578I never got burn-in on mine and I put thousands of hours of gaming into it. I don't really understand how it could burn in easier when you are sharing the phosphor wear across 3 separate tubes instead of blasting 3 beams at a single tube like a typical CRT. It should be the same or better at handing burn in than a typical CRT.
>>12571115use to play ps1 link cable games with friends on one of these and mom's tiny b&w kitchen tv. you had to win your way from the couch, to the tiny tv, then to the bigscreen and try not to lose so you stayed on the big tv
>>12571641Challenging
>>12571115>>12571127This thread will be flooded with Zoomers who only saw these when they were 10+ years old and and badly out of calibration. When they were new they had a nice picture. Not as great as a direct view CRT, but a lot better than the way they looked in the 2000s.
I would enjoy a rear projection shader for RetroArch as a novelty. Would be fun to combine it with a huge 4k HDTV. It would need to take into account the chromatic aberration, vignetting, and hotspotting that was native to this type of display even under optimal conditions.
Eww lol
Many fond memories of playing on these in community spaces.
