Lets say I have linux mint on a cardboard laptop
lets say im interested in playing System Shock 1
Lets say I tried dosbox and it runs at 5 fps

Whats the best way to play SS1? Should I just play the remake?

Im not trans im poor lmao. Pre-Covid gaming PC broke right as covid happened, just been using this really old shitty laptop with linux cause windows literally does not run on this POS.

Looks like there was a source port for linux for "Shockolate" but the fuckin fluidsynth package is too new on my mint build, and I cant get the old one. yeah you guys are right FUCK linux. Im too retarded to build some bullshit just for myself.

Would have just Gog-Gamed the fuckin Enhanced Edition but I cant find a yarrharr for the linux edition.

Just gonna try harder at setting up dosbox better.
>>
>>12572016
>but I cant find a yarrharr for the linux edition
Just run the windows version through Wine.
Also, Mint is really bad, even for shitty laptops; it's only recommended by boomers regurgitating Reddit posts from 2015. I would rather put Debian or Manjaro on a low-end machine.
>>
>>12572021
Noted, im a noob at linux so I dont know what im doing really and chatgpt and helped with a lot of terminal shit ive had to do with playing Crispy Hexen and Crispy Doom on natively on linux

I will try running the port on wine though, maybe i was just worried about wine running like shit on this laptop

I use Linux Mint, and I was curious after reading your post, so I just tried it. I just got it working, if you're still interested in using it.
The latest release from GitHub actually has the required fluidsynth package in its "lib" folder, but its filename isn't right. I assume this is just a packaging fuck-up by the Shockolate developers. But what do I know? I don't really understand how library linking works. I just know how to troubleshoot for a few minutes before giving up.
No, by the way, I don't know why the windows title bar says 0.6 when the release is 0.7.7, but I assume the developer just fucked that up too.

Install the GOG version in Lutris. Problem solved.
>>12571963
In other words you're a tech illiterate retard who doesn't know how to click a few buttons to install. Many such cases on this websight.

>Would have just Gog-Gamed the fuckin Enhanced Edition but I cant find a yarrharr for the linux edition.
I have the original and enhanced editions in my GOG library but neither have a native Linux version, only Windows and Mac. Not that it matters in 2026 anyway since 99% of Windows games run as well in Linux if not better thanks to Proton. A lot of times the native Linux ports of games will actually run worse than just running the Windows version in Lutris or Heroic Games Launcher, so consider that moving forward as well.
>>
>>12572536
That's weird. The original game on Steam (titled "System Shock: Classic" and not listed in the store but included with "System Shock: Enhanced Edition") does have a Linux release. (Not that it really matters though, considering a Linux release of a DOS game just means it comes with a Linux build of DOSBox instead of a Windows build of DOSBox, and if you really want to emulate DOS then you should probably be using a more up-to-date build like DOSBox Staging anyway. But on that note, I don't think a DOSBox-wrapped game is very a good example of "native Linux ports run worse than the Windows version" because it's literally not a port and you're not running the game natively on any OS unless that OS is DOS. To be fair, I've seen DOSBox-wrapped games whose Linux releases come with non-functioning copies of DOSBox that complain about missing dependencies, but having a separate copy of DOSBox for every game is ridiculous, so I generally just ignore the included emulator unless I'm curious to see how badly they fucked up packaging it.)
>>
>>12572550
Tbh if a game uses DOSBox anyway I'd just find the original installer and run it in a more up to date DOSBox as you suggested.
>>
>>12571963
Fippy bippy.
>>
>>12572571
For DOSBox-powered games that have a Linux release, I usually just replace the included DOSBox executable with a symbolic link to my own DOSBox Staging executable and launch the game through Steam as normal, and it usually just works. (Sometimes it requires a minor configuration change, because DOSBox Staging doesn't have exactly the same options.)
For DOSBox-powered games with only a Windows release, I force them to use "native" DOSBox anyway with Boxtron (unmaintained but still usable) or Luxtorpeda.
>>
System Shock Enhanced is a great way to play it. Should work via proton.
>>
>>12572016
>using this really old shitty laptop with linux cause windows literally does not run on this POS.
post specs of your shit laptop. chances are if it's shit enough, it can install WinXP just fine. and the old versions of DOSbox can probably run it faster. that or partition your HDD/SSD to install DOS-based Win98.

>put i only want Win11!!!
gay >>12572037 . then again you're already running a bloated loonix on a shittop.

>>12572579 >>12572571
the last time i ran DosBox Staging , it ran everything slower than the last official DosBox 0.73. then it slowed to a crawl after an hour or so. all they did was add a memory leaks into Dosbox and call it "updated" for Win11 or whatever. also it's full of filters, which may or may not be causing the leak even when the filters are turned off by default on some GOG downloads.
>>
>>12572659
>filters
You can disable that in the main dosbox-staging config file.
>even when the filters are turned off by default on some GOG downloads
Then obviously those games' included config files aren't overriding the relevant dosbox-staging config value.
>>
>>12571959
Play the gog version? There is a remaster and you can make it play loke the original if you wish, this is different than the remake by the way.
>>
>>12572703
>>even when the filters are turned off by default on some GOG downloads
>Then obviously those games' included config files aren't overriding the relevant dosbox-staging config value.

no idea. the game sure didn't look like it was using filters, but i could be blinded by rage. i gave up and just extracted the original files from the GOG ISO file, and ran them in my own old DosBox 0.73. there's absolutely no reason for me to keep trying to run Staging if the dev only added more bloat and weird config bugs to it.
>>
>>12572016
Anon the GOG remaster goes for like 2 dollars regularly, pretty sure its even been given away at some point. nigga just buy it
>>
>>12572712
i doubt he/xe/tranny can run the remake if the laptop is too crap to install Win11. or maybe he was trying to install Windows on a Chromebook? who knows.
>>
>>12572659
I remember running the gog version of realms of the hunting on steam deck and it ran like shit, but then i just made it run at like 800% and it ran at a proper speed. Dosbox is just weird like that.
>>
I'm beginning to see why this board usually just talks about console games
>>
>>12572737
it's even worse on /g/. a good third of the board is the same OS console wars EVERY single day and jannies don't give a fuck
>>
>>12571959
try the sourceport it's great
https://github.com/tsilvs/shockolate
you should grab the files from the oldgog release
>>
>>12572713
Oh, sorry, I thought you meant the games were still using filters even though their config files didn't set filters, so I was just pointing out that it'll fall back on what's in the main config unless overridden.
Regarding possible memory leaks and performance issues, I don't think I've experienced any of that, but I haven't used Staging on a weak computer. It's possible that it's slower than the original DOSBox and my machine just powers through it anyway.
CRT shaders being on by default does seem like the most likely reason performance would get worse though.
>>
>>12573372
>It's possible that it's slower than the original DOSBox and my machine just powers through it anyway.

even if it did force filters on all the time, it should not memory leak like this. within an hour it starts overheating my CPU and use up as much RAM as Firefox the RAM hog.

for comparison, i use filters Snes9x and Gens emus all the time and they NEVER memory leaked like this. the Staging dev is a moronical vibe coder for sure. or it's made by the dumbest most bloated AI bots. they must be destroyed for the /vr/ good.
>>
>>12572717
>800% and it ran at a proper speed
are you another AI reply bot? pretty sure you can't set Dosbox to run at 800 percent, if you meant Cycles setting. "max" or 100% is the maximum. that haven't been changed in Staging.
>>
>>12574626
It was more than a year ago, i set ot to some crazy bumber because it was so laggy and suddenly everything worked. It was on a steam deck.
>>
>>12573119
>>12572737
loonix is still bad for running games. or at least games that aren't officially tested on steam's ProtonOS loonix variant.

now try talking about running console emus on loonix mint and see what happens.
>>
>>12574629
>It was on a steam deck.
sounds like a steam problem. maybe it was battery saving.
>>
>>12574635
No it wasn't that, i spend hours on it intil i got it working. Funny thing is once i played the first area to test it out i just stopped because i was so tired from all the fixing and never picked it back up lol.
>>
>>12574621
>, i use filters Snes9x and Gens emus
ok for more PC related games, SCUMMVM also ran filters perfectly for me. no noticeable slowdown or memory hogging. but i got tired of adventure puzzling games so whatever. that said SCUMMVM does seem to be a more stable emu than any version of DosBox.

I had my “I use Arch, by the way” phase, but I’ve moved on. Windows 10 IoT LTSC is all you need: no wasting time troubleshooting nonsense. Some troons just seem to thrive on drama, much like you.

Win 8.5 was the last good Faildows IMO. Win10 was when they tried to do "Windows as a service" online subscription bullshit. but that's not a /vr/ platform

whats youre settings on dosbox and what fork you running and one other way to play dos games is to make a freedos vm with qemu and play dos games that way

That’s not a real thing.
