Is playing with the original-like controller a noticeably better experience than using a regular modern one?

The controllers are awful, condensing power and reset into one button was dumb, and you have to plug in a huge fucking brick to power it (I know AVGN mentioned that once).

As someone who had an Intellivision 1 when it was new, I prefer the 2's controllers.Also, to >>12572032 's point, the Sprint's controllers are pretty much locked to the Sprint (to my knowledge). The best new-school controller was with the Flashback. Removable/replaceable, and using a bespoke adapter or being good with a soldering iron can be used with the INTV2.
