I'm chipping away at San Andreas again and I'm really appreciating how alive the game feels for 2004. I find myself walking around instead of driving a lot of the time mainly because it doesn't feel boring like the later entries. What are some open world /vr/ titles that feel especially alive to you anon?

Does it still count as open world if the games areas are divided up by load screens? If yes, then Shenmue 2 is my pick. Game has like 1000 or so NPCs and they can all be talked to and are fully voiced.

SA is Rockstar's magnum opus
Magazines previews and cut content videos show that they had even bigger plans for the game. They probably ran out of time.
>>
>>12572761
Neat but is there a hot coffee mod?
>>
>>12572759
I played the whole game without realizing the rock station DJ was Axl Rose even though I like GnR. What a waste though he didn't even do the Axl voice which you would think a rock DJ would do if they could.
>>
>>12572862
the time was already extended since initially they planned 2003 release date but it would collide with Manhunt's release
>>
>>12572865
Ryo is a disciplined good boy trained in martial arts, not a degenerate coomer
>>
>>12572759
Whenever I want to replay SA I remember flight school and nigger toy missions, and I don't anymore
>>
>>12572880
but they are piss easy
>>
>>12572884
On a console, maybe. PC controls (at least on release) were fucked beyond repair
>>
>>12572889
On PC they were fine too.
Q and E for rotating the heli or turning the plane
Down for leaning up and up for leaning down. Nothing else.
>>
>>12572862
i wish i could play gtasa for the first time again
>>
>>12572759
in the badlands i walked most of the time because any time you try to take even a small shortcut your vehicle flips over
>>
My favorite thing about PS2 San Andreas is how fast NPCs' cars and trucks are scripted to be on the major highways. 18-wheelers going faster than sports cars while every other shitty vehicle around them is going the same ludicrous speed, and then they all crash (into you).

If the health of your car matters, trying to even get on the highway is basically a death sentence in Las Venturas.
>>
As a non-mutt I'm curious, did San Andreas cause any racial tensions in US when it came out? It was the first black culture game and I assume many white kids unwittingly adopted black mannerisms after playing it.
>>
>>12572992
Not really. A lot of people complained about having to play as a black character and there were mods to make CJ white.
Wiggers already existed long before the game.
>>
>>12572972
>park car on any point of the Julius Thruway
>get out
>watch chaos unfold
Guaranteed hilarity
>>
>>12572784
Did SA really improve race relations?
>>
>>12572869
That's part of the joke though, that DJ is a classic rock loving old fart who repeatedly throws shade on Radio X and the music they play (including Welcome To The Jungle), that character would never do the Axl voice.
I imagine it was an absolute treat for him to play a parody of radio hosts who would bash his own music some 15 years before. The platonic ideal of an in-joke
>>
>>12573069
Also that DJ died in his own vomit
>>
>>12573048
it didn't hurt them, let's put it that way. but in current year if the same game came out (or, say, GTA 6 main protag was a black guy), we would be seeing the incel meltdown of the decade on /v/
>>
>>12573048
You have no idea how big the impact of SA was on impressionable 12 year old boys, I don't think the wigger phenomenon could have truly existed without its influence, it's up there with Chappelle Show and The Boondocks as the holy trinity of 2000s wigger culture.
>>
Played it for the first time 3 years ago and enjoyed it IMMENSELY.

I think it's the only game I ever played, other than maybe RDR2, where I enjoyed simply walking around and interacting with the world. Cruising through Tierra Robada/Bone County while blasting this:

>>
>>12573089
eminem was bigger than all 3 of those combined and got famous before SA. do you even live in the western hemisphere?
>>
>>12573179
What does Eminem have to do with what I'm talking about? I'm talking about white people identifying with black people in media, Eminem is a white guy doing black people shit. Eminem is himself a wigger, I'm talking about what creates wiggers, that is, white people identifying with black people directly, not through some other wigger like Eminem.
>>
>>12572862
Nothing compares to playing this for the first time back when it released

Then playing RuneScape and COD4
>>
>>12573089
>I don't think the wigger phenomenon could have truly existed without its influence
You're way off. They were mainstream enough by 1998 to be made fun of in pop culture

child were you just not paying attention in the late 90's-early 2000's? the near constant push of rap, rnb and all the rest? fresh prince?
>>
>>12573048
I wouldn't say that, but it did give people who never lived in the hood or had to interact with it on how shitty it wa and the crabs-in-a-bucket mentality it fosters in those unable to leave vs those who do, as CJ says
>"Man, what the hood done for me? Always dragging me down. Ever since I got out of the hood shit been cracking! That's everybody's dream, to get out of the hood..."
If nothing else, it took something many people were dismissive of and made them go, "oh...this is actually really shitty for these people, and a lot of them just had the bad luck of being born into it"
>>
>>12572862
>SA is Rockstar's magnum opus
I would say that's still Bully but SA is a close second.
>>
>>12572862
>SA is Rockstar's magnum opus
That's IV. But it wouldn't be retro.
>>
>>12573189
>What does Eminem have to do with what I'm talking about?
uh he is the primary driving force behind wiggers? jesus christ. all these fucking zoom zooms asking AI questions about pop culture they weren't alive to experience.

drug addicted mothers having sex out of wedlock for the express purpose of the opposite of procreation
then these mothers (colloquially: moms) while still husbandless, jobless, and drug addicted, have to stay around those kinds, if the kid survives, it's got nothing but bad choices because it's all it knows
eminem might have a conscience though

My uncle was going off about how black people shouldn't call each other niggers because it's just as bad as a white person saying it.
I told him it's an inclusive term when they say it and an insult when a random white persona calls them one.

I wouldn't have said anything but I was deep into SA at the time.

Nice of you to prove his point.
>>
>>12574719
Is your uncle black? Because yeah, I know plenty of older black guys who are of the opinion that no one should say it, and it's not going to magically stop having its power as a slur just because some people use it as a term of endearment. Which just reminds me of the Boondocks bit with the 2 epigraphs at the start of the MLK episode
>I want young men and young women who are not alive today to know and see that these new privileges and opportunities did not come without somebody suffering and sacrificing for them.
—Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
>Whatever, nigga.
—Anonymous

It definitely depends on how old you were when San Andreas first came out. I’m white as hell, but I’d seen Boyz n the Hood and Menace II Society and recognized what Rockstar was borrowing from.

>Boyz in the Hood

I'm not ashamed to admit I had a bit of a crush on Regina King when younger, and she was in those and Friday. Now I know how men in the 60s felt about Uhura in Star Trek
>>
>>12574741
>Is your uncle black?
No. iirc he brought up the topic because he heard a black man speaking on TV.
I understand the perspective, but it bothered me because he was describing it like that was the correct opinion because a black man said it.

San Andreas truly is one of the most glorious games ever made. It deserved all the hype it got, and then some.
>>
>>12575956
The 80s aesthetic is cool, but SA mogs it so much in almost every aspect, it's not even a fair comparison.
>>
>>12572759
>mainly because it doesn't feel boring
Wait till you get to San Fierro
>>
>>12576783
San Fierro is kino, you utter philistine.
>>
>>12576762
Pretty much this. As much as I love Vice City, San Andreas is objectively better in nearly every aspect. Speaking of Vice City, is VCS any good outside of having swimming? I know it came after San Andreas so I'm wondering if any of the improvements that game had crossed over.
>>
>>12572784
all you had to do was follow the train, CJ
>>
File: gtasa blade.jpg (184 KB, 1280x720)
184 KB JPG
For me, it's the Blade.
My major complaint with the game is that you almost need to use the handbrake to slide cars.
>>
>>12576797
Vice City is still worth playing just for the atmosphere, but San Andreas is indeed far superior. Never played VCS, but I know that many consider in to be superior to the original Vice City.
>>
>>12576835
Always been a Cheeta man myself, though that car arguably fit better with Vice City's aesthetic.
