FIGHT, FOR THE FRONT, AND FREEDOMMOVE OUT
What did they mean by this?
>>12574392are there even any decent gzdoom/uzdoom mods for strife?i played the veteran edition a while back but found the overall experience janky as fuck
so what's the deal with Strife's setting, is it mediaeval or futuristic
>>12574410Yes.
>>12574408there was some campaign for it that released relatively recently, even was in newpost here. Some anons might know what I'm talking about because I don't remember the name of it
>>12574408There's some, but not a lot. I recall that WWHC Diaz was compatible with it, and there was some kinda cool mod for it which doesn't work with GzDoom anymore (needed a tweaked line or something). There was also Brutal Strife, which I played once, it was ok.
>>12574423>knight cream
>>12574000>Ad Mortem comes up second to that (if far better managed and handled), as it's still unfinished also. It's not even unfinished, it just needs some bug fixes. also the comparison is retarded. I'd rather have a beta release that keeps getting updated than a project that's been hidden away from the people who contributed to it for 4-5 years while nothing gets done with it
is strife worth playing?
>>12574371>It was during the development of Doom the Way iD Did. They actually were good friends upon a time, but esselfortium was perfectionist and critical while 40 of course had his laissez-faire "accept everyone" perspective, and they pretty much drove each other insane as soon as they had to work on a project together. That's interesting, I had not heard this perspective before. I was convinced it developed out of rivalry between BTSX and UAC Ultra.
>>12574407uzdoom will never have a hidden flag to replace random corpses with this
>>12574483Do we even have a proper wad where you play as a nazi that isn't a joke or a shitpost?
>>12574407Mean by what? What map is that?
What do anons think of maps with high kill counts but not in the style of a slaughter map? Meaning a big map with a lot of reasonably sized encounters or micro slaughter combat. Is a long map that feels like climbing a mountain interesting or does it get tedious when you spend an hour on a map and it's still not over? Feels like many people consider rapid tempo and short levels to be the essence of Doom, after all it's how classic Doom episodes were like.
>>12574492mappers don't have enough skill for it, nobody can cleanly finish eviternity's anagnorisis without missing some kills
>>12574492Giant adventure maps? Yeah I love those, when I'm in the mood for them. Try MAINANTANCE COMPLEX https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/0-9/2complex
>>12574495>nobody can cleanly finish eviternity's anagnorisis without missing some killsThat's okay. It's still a great, long map, and to answer >>12574492>Is a long map that feels like climbing a mountain interesting or does it get tedious when you spend an hour on a map and it's still not over?I'd say it's very interesting and well worth it, just appropriately exhausting, and not an experience I'm eager to do consecutively.
>>12574492It does get tiring and sometimes it would greatly benefit from being split into multiple maps, but I don't mind it. I like long maps that feel like a journey but I also play with saves.Noonday Demons does it very well.
>>12574415Pollutants. It's OK.
>>12574495>nobody can cleanly finish eviternity's anagnorisis without missing some killsDoes that really matter, though?I mean, with a long, meandering journey map, playing it as a hyper-optimized 100% clearance seems like missing the point.
>>12574528Must kill demon.Must kill all demon.
>>12574494>from creators of Rise of the Triad (2013), Phantom Fury and Unity ports of Wrath and KingpinDuke dodged the bullet. Thanks, Randy, but unironically.
>>12574492These maps do not work in Doom, period. There is no checkpoint system, so your map has to have a completely dull and flat difficulty curve to be reasonable to learn saveless (read: without cheating). The moment I see one of these maps your wad is getting deleted.
>>12574535Well, I get that. It's more the implication that it has to be efficient & expeditious that I took issue with.
>>12574451It's worth trying out and seeing for yourself. It's not awful by any metric and some people really love it.
>>12574550>saveless (read: without cheating)
>>12574550>your map has to have a completely dull and flat difficulty curve to be reasonable to learn saveless (read: without cheating). The moment I see one of these maps your wad is getting deleted>dull and flat difficulty curve>saveless (read: without cheating)Oh, it was a setup for a troll response. I mistook it for an interesting question.
>>12574550TIP: Save your game and save it often. When you die, you're back to the beginning of the level, toting that little pistol again. That ain't good, especially after you progress to some of the tougher levels.
>spending months of your life to learn the optimal strategy and grind for a perfect saveless, pistol start run of Super Slop Slaughter #868429135 is a good fun use of your free time>but dropping a save or two in an hour long map is somehow wrong and you shouldn't do it (plis)
>>12574561what's really worse or more punishing: speedrunning a map or playing a slaughterslop map?
Port feature idea, adding forced checkpoints.Should be easy enough to do for any port with UDMF and UMAPINFO support.
>>12574553>>12574559>>12574560Coping save scummers. I will not play your shitwads. It's not the player's job to guess how much cheating is reasonable to beat your level. This should be an obvious first principle of game design if you think about it for even half a second.

>>12574568so trve
>>12574564I'm pretty sure that already exists, I remember playing wads that do it. Noonsday Demons does it when you finish a map, there's no tally screen so maps flow seamlessly and you already have saves in the beginning of the new map.
>>12574565Your masochism is unrelated to the intended design of the game.

>>12574610lol
>>12574492My favorite genre as far as single map releases go. In episodes it's a welcome treat, but in megawads I'm a bit weary. They can be good, but oftentimes there will be lumped together or near hard, tiring maps.

>>12574392>OM THREADMeditation edition.
>>12574610I would say that pretty much all FPS levels are Polite, rising to Tough or Nasty if there are any setpieces that require shooting buttons and you don't have an infinite-ammo sidearm like in Q2.It's generally obvious when saving is a bad idea (low health, low ammo), it's often telegraphed when a big fight is coming up by a sudden spike in ammo and health pickups, and puzzles are either absent entirely or fairly simple. One-shot difficult puzzles that affect something across the map with little warning are usually restricted to secrets, which are optional to finish the game.
>>12574423>slop results
>>12574645No third-party or fanmade level asks the player to cheat, either. What a ridiculous thing to say.

>>12574660No, it's reloading.Recording, of course, is saving every gametic.Check.
>This discussion is happeningUnless you're recording a demo, saving doesn't matter. Doesn't matter one iota. Nobody gives a fuck if you say you beat Morbid Autumn without saving. Somebody might give a fuck if you show people you beat Morbid Autumn without saving.
>>12574663And mate. Choosing a save spot after something like a key compared to being able to rewind any death to any point is still a world of difference.

Are there any doom/quack/build engine mods that are melee based? GMOTA and Hedon aside. I know about Blade of Agony's pic related but the game has such awful motion blur I don't think I can be bothered to replay it.Also played a bit of the knight(Merljin?) in The AMC Squad but he was awful to play as in most of the maps I played that weren't locked specifically to him.
>>12575125>Are there any doom/quack/build engine mods that are melee based? For Quake there's 'bonk jam' but it's really shallow and gimmicky.Mjolnir has a decent selection of melee weapons, but they're not the focus at all. >>12575359So do others though, are we gonna include them as well? Even if we selected only ones who are notable, that still adds up a lot, I think it would clutter up the newspost which is primarily about releases and especially notable events.Would we also add entries for written reviews like OneManDoom? I like to read that one sometimes, but I don't think it would be worth adding to the newspost.>>12575367Stuff like Cacowards are already pushing this, but I think nobody protests because there's only maybe two, annual awards things people do for Doom stuff (with an occasional attempted third), so they're not a constant addition.I feel that it's better if people use their own subscription feed for that on YouTube if they wanna keep up with reviewers (who there's dozens of, posting many times a year), meanwhile, the newspost is supposed to be our own 'subscription' feed.Maybe a better idea would be if someone who's really interested maintained their own occasional "Recent Reviews" post or something like that.
>>12575387A few, mostly sets for the first game, like DTWID, because that's basically the only way they were supported for non-advanced sourceports.I think MBF21 and UMAPINFO were supposed to support them in some manner, but I don't recall if they did or not.

Let's actually see, for those of you who have submitted or is working on a map for this project, how many of you liked working with Eternity, and do you see yourself making more content for it in the future?Personally, I'm only finishing my one map, I simply see no reason to ever make any more content for this sourceport when MBF21 and GzDoom exist, they're both just better.
>>12576620I enjoy working with Eternity for the same reason I enjoy working with things like dehacked, it provides contrived problems for me to solve and things for me to learn within certain limitations. Once I run out of things to learn however, I'll lose interest. It's unclear to me at this time if that extends beyond this project, I think not by much. It seems hard to argue that MBF21 is simply better than Eternity when it's capable of doing many things impossible with that format. I'd recommend people consider Eternity for their projects for the same reason I'd recommend considering Boom, MBF(21), or limit-removing; because they want to use more advanced features (than vanilla), but they don't need all the features present in gzdoom, with the caveat that fewer people play it because most of them have never even heard of Eternity. The absence of certain features can in rare circumstances also work in the mappers favor if those limitations align with their intent. For example, since Eternity only has a software renderer, you don't need to worry about how your map might look wrong with hardware rendering. But making an informed decision about such minutia requires a thorough understanding about the various formats that few people have.

>>12576604>How can Mapster32 be improved?I been using it for year and a half and I couldn't give you a good answer on what is needed. Lots and lots of general QoL that you wouldn't understand (and I'd have trouble explaining) without having a bit of experience with it. I'm sure most people want Ultimate Duke Builder or something like that, I don't think that would work that well. I tried mapster first and then checked how UDB works to see why people like it so much and I don't get it. Too much shit on screen and it's in whitemode. I'm watching Civvie's review of the PS1 Alien Resurrection, a game that I've never played, and even tho I don't have any interest in playing it, I think it's a beautiful looking game. I love the dark, industrial, dull metal hull environments with its oppressive atmosphere. >trying heretic + hexen re-release on steam>cleric gets a shield for parrying enemiesKinda sickI love clerics but they're better when they aren't just a half mage half warrior or a heal bitch.Having unique defensive and utility options is in line with how I feel clerics ought to be portrayed in gameplay, I just wish the parry was thematically more mystical in nature. Like holding up a holy symbol, and maybe it should cost mana
>>12577069It's a cool ability, but I'll never get why they didn't give the other two classes something new. Besides, the Cleric was already pretty strong.
>>12577074Do any of the classes stand out as being better than the others? The one time I played hexen was years ago and I only played a bit of it as cleric and never finished it. I assumed they would all be kinda strong.
>>12576938Having on grid blocks intercept other blocks is never an issue. Having angled brushes intercept other angled brushes is usually okay so long as they are on grid. When they are off grid and really complex is when problems start to arise and you get lots of polygon splits which can lead to micro leaks. On rare occasions if its really severe, the collision of the surrounding area can become all screwed up leading to invisible walls or no collision at all. If you have a complex off grid structure like a sconce or something that is overlapping into a wall and for one reason or another can't move it, make the sconce a func_wall entity. That stops it from causing splits with any other brushes touching it and can prevent the issues mentioned earlier.
>>12577081Fighter is fastest. Mage is pretty good at damaging multiple enemies at the same time.Cleric is however the strongest with how broken his ultimate weapon and flechette are and well rounded is the rest of the arsenal. His weak point was that mace took too much time to kill anything, but then geniuses at Nightdive decided to just break him further by adding parry, now you never have to switch.

>>12576310NTA, but I thought it was more asking how it would look with one.Personally, the real question then would always be: what's behind it?I see a few dead trees, so it's probably built on solid ground in a sparse area.If there's nothing in the background meant to draw the player's attention, it doesn't really matter as long as they can't get stuck outside.Open balconies have a naturally isolated environment atmosphere, while fences give the impression that things are deliberately kept out of (or in) the space.
