DualShock is the definitive controller design after 30 years. What went right here?
Retro Digital foundry talk about the dualshock in their Ape escape podcast They think it just that Sony want to surpass Nintendo in everything Nintendo make shoulder buttons>let's add another row of shoulder buttons despite the facts that R1/L1 was barely used on the SNESNintendo make rumble pack>let's make a much better rumble pack with different levels of vibrationsNintendo make a joystick>let's go with 2 joystick we don't know the purpose of the second but who caresOh and make the joystick clickable too
>>12575254Every interview with Teiyuu Goto indicates it's the complete opposite and they have a far more clever and deliberate way of thinking about and solving these problems.

its good but i prefer asymmetrical sticks. i do most of my non-kb/m /vr/ gaming on a generic xbox pc controller

It didn't have the L2 and R2 analog trigger buttons for shooting and driving until ps3 but otherwise yes. They also tried the pressure buttons for other buttons during ps2-3 but dropped it after that.
>>12576485Triggers for shooting is the most retarded thing to ever happen to controller input>b-but it gives an irl shooting feelSaid the virgin who have never handled a gun>b-but for racing gameRight analog stick is way better.R1 is the definitive shoot should've been for video games
>>12576617I'm the same anon but I actually recall flipping the aim and shoot to L1 and R1 to some games because I don't like holding the button down when I can just press less to shoot. If I had to guess there's hardly any game which would use the trigger to function like a real trigger as in "you have to slowly squeeze it, not pull it at once" because why bother.About the right analog being accelerate and reverse, I think some far cry game had it and that was okay.
>>12576660Ps. My experiences might be outdated but I recall gta iv had a thing where if you hold down L2 slightly you free aim, if you press it fully you lock to enemies. But I always play the game with free aim only so I don't have use.
>>12575243I've been playing dpad-focused retro games on Switch Online and I realized 2 offset analog sticks like the DualShock is the way to go. It's much easier to use an offset analog stick than it is to use an offset dpad like on Nintendo and Xbox controllers. With the Dualshock you get the best of both worlds whereas with other controllers I feel like I need to break out a dpad-specific controller if I want to play a retro 2D game.
>>12576617>Right analog stick is way betterFuck no
>>12575243Steal the already great SNES controller and make it better. Then copy the N64's analog stick but have two because symmetry is pretty.
>>12575254>Nintendo make a joystick>let's go with 2 joystick we don't know the purpose of the second but who caresSony made a dual analog controller years before the DS1. If anything it was Nintendo that was chasing them.
>>12578559You’re referring to this, aren’t you? You know this isn’t what people mean when they say analog stick; these are more akin to arcade joysticks.
