The Adventures of Bayou Billy
>>12575817You forgot your shitty blogpost.Anyway this is the only case where I would say the Japanese version is better because the balance changes for the western version ruined it. Every other case the western versions are better and people telling you otherwise got filtered, but in the case of Mad City -> Bayou Billy they went too far, probably because it's one of the first games to do such balance changes (I can't think of any before hand, it might be the very first one)For the time it came out in, the game is really impressive with its 3 different gameplay modes, it's sorta like Challenger or that Doreamon game, neither of which were released in the west, but with gameplay types more suited for Americans. you're not searching around for shit like in Challenger or Doreamon but instead you shoot and punch, fuck yeah.
>>12575817I remember Famidaily in his review of this game fell for the old "derf they jacked up the difficulty to discourage rentals" meme when that's been disproven. In reality it was more that Western game magazines jerked off super hard games while Japanese didn't like them. That said this game is indeed bullshit, at least the US version. It didn't sell well either probably because of that, actually the Famicom one was more successful.
>>12575836>but with gameplay types more suited for Americans. you're not searching around for shit like in Challenger or Doreamon butDidn't stop them with Milon's Secret Castle.
>>12575817>"I hope you kept the receipt!"
even with the ratcheted up difficulty it's still pretty good. the attempt to put several types of gameplay in was ambitious. doesn't quite work out and is only playable because Konami's dev teams were that good.
>>12575817the MC is some kind of fusion of Crocodile Dundee and Rambo. That is he looks like the former but the game's story is just the plot of First Blood and it takes place in Louisiana not Australia.
>>12575817The Famicom version was the first game since the very early days of the console to have Zapper support since the Zapper wasn't that popular in Japan. Also the Famicom Zapper looks absolutely badass compared to the ugly toy thingy we got.
>>12575817>Japanese version was a standard Nintendo MMC1 cart not a Konami VRC oneEither they didn't have enough production capacity and had to buy carts from Nintendo or the game was always meant for a US localization so they did that to minimize the amount of work they had to do.
nowadays there's no real reason to play the US version over the Japanese one. though idk what's with the silly trivia questions thing in Mad City.
>>12575920>Either they didn't have enough production capacity and had to buy carts from Nintendo or the game was always meant for a US localization so they did that to minimize the amount of work they had to do.To me, this game always felt like one of Konami's first attempt at making a game specifically for the western market... but it was released almost a year after Japan in the US so something doesn't quite compute with this train of thought.
>>12575853at least it's not The Adventures of Lolo
>>12575848>youtuber spouts nonsense meme opinionYou don't say??? his recent video on Jaguar Wolfenstein 3D also claims that "you can't dodge hitscan", as a general rule. Another nonsense meme opinion based on a few examples that don't make it a rule
>>12575963Top Gun was the first, it came out in the US first, Japan second, and also the first Konami game where they bought Nintendo's carts instead of using their own ones. That said, Mad City was out in Japan a good 11 months before its US release, so...
>>12575848he's working on reviewing the PCE library now, apparently
>>12575848Famitsu reviews from the period were always whining that something was too hard.
>>12575930Same with many other Konami titles like Salamander and Contra.
>>12576040Top Gun was probably a hit movie in Japan also I would think? I was thinking more along the lines of games like the first TMNT or The Lone Ranger, things definitely designed for a western audiance first and foremost. That's what Bayou Billy feels like to me due to many things, the pure action gameplay, the focus on the zapper (which wasn't popular in Japan), and the american characters and settings. But as we've said I can't explain the 11 months delay in release.
>>12576056Konami could only release 5 US games a year (prior to starting Ultra Games, anyway) so that could be why.
bayou kung-fu karate kick
>>12575836I like the western version better. The Japanese one is too easy.
>>12575817Bring him back Konami
There should have been more retro games set in Louisiana. I know this is considered a kusoge but I quite enjoy it. The setting and music are great. What other NES game lets you walk down Bourbon Street and beat the shit out of people.
>>12575880GOD FUCKING DAMN! That's nearly as badass as the Odyssey's lightgun.
the Mexican Runner beat the game in an hour and 37, doesn't seem that hard
That's some revealing outfit there, surprised NOA let them get away with it.
>>12576769believe it or not her outfit in the Famicom version was actually less revealing than the US version
>>12576752It's definitely beatable. Considerably easier than shit like Battletoads.
>>12576879It's a short game and the light gun stages are piss easy. The driving stages are decently hard. The only hard stages are the shitty beat me up ones because the enemies don't flinch. So a short game made even shorter in that the only real hard stages take up about 40% of the game. People get their ass kicked in stage 1 and write it off as impossible assuming every stage is that beat me up difficulty.
>>12575817What?
>>12576793the old trick to get away with stuff
>>12577020The enemies take more hits in the US version and are less generous with dropping health refills.
