What were the original uses for a HDD in a PS2?
>>12576130Final Fantasy XI and Linux
Final fantasy 11 I think. The hdd thing is actually a network adapter. Nowdays its just for playing pirated games.
this could have been a google search
>>12576130Not manyFF11LinuxDirge Of Cerbus (online mode)Random online mode for Japanese gamesAside from that the most common was optional data written to it for fasrer load times, for example Resident Evil Outbreak 1/2 or for what we now know as DLC, some games like SOCOM had extra maps available for download.
Phantasy stars wasn't online here?
>>12576153That was only on gamecube I think.
You didn't need a hard drive to play all games online, right? I remember only having the network adapter and playing Tony Hawk and Medal of Honor online, but not having an HDD in it. Could be wrong>>12576153PSOii is on everything but the PS2
>>12576160No you didn't need it. Japan got tons of use out of the hard drive if you look up ps2bbn. Kind of crazy how far ahead it was.
>>12576130>1. Running Final Fantasy XI (The Primary Catalyst)For the vast majority of players outside of Japan, the PS2 HDD was practically synonymous with Final Fantasy XI. Square Enix’s massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) required a hard drive to function. The HDD was needed to install the massive game files, store player data, and download constant updates, patches, and expansions—something a standard memory card could never handle. In North America, the HDD was actually bundled specifically with FFXI.>2. Drastically Reducing Load Times (Data Caching)Resident Evil Outbreak: This game was notorious for its excruciatingly long load times when playing off the disc. Installing it to the HDD made it dramatically faster and far more playable.Street Fighter EX3 & Tekken 4: Certain fighting games allowed you to install core data to the HDD to make character loading near-instantaneous between matches.>3. Downloadable Content (DLC) and PatchesSOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs: Players could download new multiplayer maps and patches straight to the hard drive.Tony Hawk's Underground: Allowed players to download other people's custom-created skate parks.>4. Linux for PlayStation 2Sony officially released a "Linux Kit" for the PS2, which essentially turned the console into a fully functional personal computer. The kit included a keyboard, mouse, VGA adapter, Linux distribution on DVD, and the 40GB HDD.>5. The PlayStation Broadband Navigator (Japan Exclusive)In Japan, the HDD had a much richer official life. Sony released the PlayStation Broadband Navigator (PSBBN), a graphical user interface that replaced the standard PS2 browser. It was a true precursor to the PS3's XMB (XrossMediaBar) and modern console dashboards. It allowed users to rip audio CDs to the hard drive, to download full games, demos, and media files directly from the internet and to host "PlayStation BB," a service that offered online matchmaking and content delivery.

>>12576130I think the main point is to pre-load date to reduce loading times. They were terrible on the Playstation, literally 5 minutes.CD drives were 1x back in those days.

few years back i bought an original hard drive for $1 + shipping and then burned some games to try out the official HDD featuresmost of it is made redundant by OPL or no longer works because of defunct serversPSBBN is cool to play with for a few minutes but not worth the bloat if you just want to play games
was always curious since i already owned the network card if i could have stored my saved games on the HDD instead of the dinky 8MB PS2 memory card since mine was always full.my memory is cloudy but i feel like it was something about software still looking for MM0 so there would be copying back and forth involved and that didn't sound ideal.whether or not that was really a native function didn't matter cus i was a teen back then and an IDE HDD was still hundreds of $$ and my $ was better used for games.
