>fc/ nes version
>soulful graphics and sound, large screen
>no battery save

>gbc version
>battery save
>looks like ass, need to get past two title screens, tiny screen that makes it impossible to navigate the overworld

>snes version
>battery save, large screen
>looks like soulless ass, need to get past two title screens

i guess i need to memorise passwords...
>>
>>12577587
Only FC version uses passwords, NES version has battery save
>>
>>12577587
> large screen

?? resolution on SNES is identical to NES (in fact a bit smaller on the Y axis but it has effectively very little bearing)
>>
>>12577587
you forgot
>fc/nes: requires walking in circles for hours at multiple points in the game to keep up with the power curve
just play the snes version, its not that great of a game anyway but you NEED to get through it first. then skip 2 and play 3 snes version for one of the greatest jrpgs of all time and the peak of dq
>>
There isn't a single remake better than the original

Famicom dragon quest is peak
>>
>>12577617
ok then the nes version is perfect, cool
>>12577654
both infinitely larger than the unplayable gameboy screen (for this type of game at least)

>then the nes version is perfect, cool
Nope, they changed all the sprites, the original Famicom ones are more soulful especially the wizard NPC sprite, in comparison the NES one is depressive.
Anyway, SFC and GBC are worth playing too, after you play original FC first.
Also don't skip 2.
>>
>>12577830
i have played gbc and sfc, especially 2. 2 is ass btw
>>
>>12577836
I played NES 2 recently and loved it, it's a fantastic game
>>
>>12577837
i think dq4 does the party thing better and dq1 is a more focused experience. i really don't see anything that dq2 does better than those two.
>>
gbc looks a hell of a lot more soulful and appealing to me, NES DQ looks like shit aside from the monsters. SNES looks bad too until they got to VI and 3make which are gorgeous.
>muh screen crunch
matters for a platforming or action game, for a simple turn based rpg not so much.
>>
>>12577860
GBC was good enough for 1 and 2's simple design, but 3's attempt to translate the DQ6-style graphics to handheld just made it looks like muddy shit.
>>
>>12577860
if you're trying to navigate the overworld and not just looking at a guide it does matter
>>
>>12577875
sure but dq 1 and 2 have pretty simple overworlds.
>>
>>12577883
2's overworld is not simple
>>
>>12577912
oh yeah, you just reminded me that dq2 will not spawn the second hero in his town until you go to your home castle and talk to your father so he can tell you he's not in your castle anymore. i hate dq2

This so fucking much, NES dragon quests games look like absolutely ASSSS outside of combat
>>
>>12578092
What's so "ass" about it? It's charming 8bit sprites. Do you guys even like retro?
The SFC remake looks great too but I don't understand how people browsing the retro board get filtered by 8bit graphics
>>
>>12577912
Hey isn't that the waterway that's pushing up fuel prices?
>>
>>12578728
They look pretty bad compared to other contemporary famicom rpgs, specially 3 and 4
>>
>>12578749
The strait of Cannock
>>12578767
Whatever, I don't think it's like sooooo bad that it's unplayable. To me it's 8bit charm

There's nothing wrong with 8 bit DQ geaphics, it's an iconic comfy look

I'm so fucking sick of handheld ports apologists.
>>
>>12581305
Will you ever tell the story of how your obsession with handheld ports started?
>>
>>12581464
There is a guy in another thread on another board who was saying he was playing a handheld port of a game, saying "I don't understand how anyone could play the original console versions they're so slow!". He then proceeded to explain how he played alongside a guide and maps to zoom (pun intended) through the game, barely engaging with the game mechanics and beat the game in no time, only to admit how unfun that was.

This is the perfect example of handheld ports apologists. They don't want to enjoy the game, just run through them at high speed, and handheld ports are perfect for that because they often include speed things or casualize the game to make it faster. I wouldn't take offense, it's their problem, EXCEPT that they precisely recommend those versions as "the best versions" to everyone else which could hamper the enjoyment of someone who'd actually want to enjoy the game, who doesn't realize who he's talking to, and who doesn't know better.

Same principle with the GBC version of DQ1 as recommended ITT
