is this really considered one of the greatest RPGs of all time or was that old man streamer lying to my face?
>>
>>12577646
i read the book version of this. it's ass
>>
>>12577646
It got #1 spot in several cRPG rankings in 1993.
>>
>>12577646
It filtered me, I'm not going to lie. The game is often confusing and frustrating and the story felt like it depended on having to read the shitty book series that I have no interest in. Not for me at all.
>>
Is the book really that bad? The writing in the game was kinda nice
>>
>>12578052
it's very videogamey, as in it's about a party of guys who all stick together and fight a ton of monsters. if you like feist's other books it's a step down
>>
>>12578049
>The game is often confusing and frustrating
How? It doesn't have that many sidequests. I mean, yes, there's no quest log, but quest logs weren't a thing at the time anyway. The only actual snag is the defective passcode sidequest from v1.02b, which requires a bunch of hex edits in a save file.
>>
>>12577646
Literally who
>>
Too much plot-driven.
Provoked me to read the books though (and they were meh).
>>

>Too much plot-driven.
It's somewhat JRPG-ish in its adherence to the narrative (game is split into chapters).
But the in-game action leans quite strongly on freeroam. You can go around 80% of the map in Chapter 1 (although it isn't really advisable).
>>
>>12577646
>old man streamer.
play the game, faggotron. the sequel is bad though.
>>12577934
the book was bretty gud. never read the more canon prequel books, which were basically fantasy westeros mage isekaied to not-japan. and elves bad.
>>
>>12579270
not talking about riftwar. serpentwar is where it's at, and were also written just before the videogame books
>>
>>12578104
>passcoe sidequest
never herd of it. i only remember there was a bug that crashed the game at Act 5 and i needed to turn off the sound to get pass that part?

>>12579213
>You can go around 80% of the map in Chapter 1 (although it isn't really advisable).
you should though, if you wanna minmax your characters. the later parts have less sidequests. also Act 4 forces you to use only the mage lad and the elf, so you should try to level up their skills in Act 1 as much as possible.

https://sierrahelp.com/Games/KrondorSeries/BaKHelp.html#BuildingFreeze

oh the patch should have fixed it but i think i started the game on an older version which somehow won't get patched??? didn't notice the crashing/freezing bug in Chapter 4 though.
>>
>>12579302
the sierrahelp's patch link doesn't work, so get it from Dimwood instead. it also has nice maps.
https://dimwood.net/krondor.html

also the link to the savegame editor at Dimwood only seems to be for Win95 so it won't work in Dosbox or any modern Windows.
>>
>>12577646
It's fun and interesting, what else do you want
>>
>>12578052
The book was written by feist, the game was written by a guy that was basically told to imitate feist but in return he really cared about it a lot while feist held the material in contempt
>>
>>12579279
I highly disrecommend combing the whole map in chapter 1. Even for minmax reasons because you use Locklear less than jimmy
>>
>>12579302
made me replay old savegames for the heck of it. looks like my patched version is working correctly. it has the "N" key function on map overhead view which lets you fix the position of the map,and only the direction arrow on the map moves when you turn around.

also made me remember that this is one of the old DOS games where you can only set 1 audio device for all audio, instead of separating music and sound effects. when set to General MIDI,some sound effects in the cut scenes seem to be missing. that or the MIDI version of the audio for cut scenes drowned out the sound effects. sound effects much louder in Adlib/Soundblaster? also the music is surprisingly good in Adlib too.

---

replayed final boss battle. a bit more harder than i remembered.i might have undertrained Pug, he almost died in the 1st round. Owyn was tough as balls, but don't matter since he got more than enough stamina to cast Dragon Skin on both mages, which makes them invincible for the whole battle. Fire spells seem to be useless on the boss and his shadowy minions? Mind Melt seems to work on the boss. i think you're suppose to use Strength Drain on those shadowy things, but i just whack them to death with staffs. boss himself had a lot more armour, so staff whacking hardly did any damage on him. in the end my River Song summons did more damage to him.

Neal Hallford wrote BaK, he also wrote for Dungeon Siege.
Did you know Feist was adopted into a media magnate dynasty. Not even his real last name. Probably got published from connections.
>>

>the game was written by a guy that was basically told to imitate feist but in return he really cared about it a lot while feist held the material in contempt
Yea, Feist didn't really care about the characters, he Poochie'd Locklear and wrote Owyn out of the series.

>>12579757
>Even for minmax reasons because you use Locklear less than jimmy
Does Locklear get any stat boosts in Chapter 5, or is he stuck with the ones from the end of Chapter 1? I can't remember.

>Fire spells seem to be useless on the boss and his shadowy minions?
Makala and the dreads guarding him take half damage from most spells (except for Strength Drain on the dreads). Back when I played it 25 or so years ago, I had Firestorm (highest non-conditional raw damage spell, targets all enemies) on both Owyn and Pug (used the cup to transfer spells) and Infinity Pools (which add +50% power to direct damage spells). I just brute-forced that fight.

i never did that quest and got the spell anyway. i think the magic cup randomly gives you the spell?

im too lazy to repatch a game i took 6 yrs to beat and don't feel like replaying from start. and Adlib muzak is underrated.
>>12580380
the walkthrough method of beating the Makala indian mage was to freeze him, put 3X Gambit of the 8 mines behind or in front of him , and then pull/push him into them. but i think the pulling spell is immune for him so i guess you have to use the more expensive pushing spell?
i never get the directions right, and this method still takes at least 5 turns, not including casting Dragon Skin so you don't get zapped to death by his minions. also the Gambit mines do random damage?
>>
>>12580380
You can leave all of owyn and goraths books they've already read in a box the others can access in a different chapter iirc

which one, lol
>>
>>12581205
It's pretty important to do that, and with spell scrolls as well, because Patrus is weak as shit, and in Chapter 5 you lack training opportunities/magic shops.

I have a feeling Feist genuinely hates his fans (I mean the people who buy his books).
>>
>>12581213
LH2? never heard of it.
i meant Betrayal At Antara. i downloaded the free version of BAK, because Sierra released BAK for free to help promote BAA.
