Are there any video game remakes that are an improvement on the original?
Mega Man 1 (Powered Up), RE 1 (REmake) are the ones that immediately come to mind

>>12578457
>>12578457imagine if the images were flipped. some old game had a lovingly crafted castle ruin and the remake devs decided boxes with some brick sprite accent were punchier.
>>12578457Theres not a single remake with more cultural relevance and more sales than the original. To be an improvement you would need to remake an already bad game which is not financially viable so it doesnt happen.

Kys zoomshit
>>12578457Lots of people prefer Star Fox 64 to the SNES version. Most people think Super Castlevania 4 is a better game than Castlevania.
>>12578524Literally every Japanese PC game that got remade on console sold better on console. How many people do you think played Snatcher on PC-88 / MSX2? How many people do you think played the CD-ROM based remake on PC Engine / Mega Drive / PlayStation / Saturn? You can spent an eternity arguing about which version is the best, but the console versions are undeniable more culturally relevant.
>>12578524Ahem
>>12578686SF64 isn't a remake of SF. R-Type and Galaga series aren't remakes, despite each game being similar.
>>12578463Also Maverick Hunter X.
>>12578730Reboots are remakes
>>12578524Pretty sure most Resident Evil remakes sold more than the originals and are the "real" versions in the mind of the fans.
>>12578781only if those so called "fans" weren't even born when the original was released
>>12578781The RE1 remake? Yeah, it's widely considered THE version to playRE2 remake? Also considered superior to the original, but not as widely as the first gameRE3 remake? Hell no, the remake is considered a lot worse than the original due to all the cut contentRE4 remake? No, the remake is considered a good/great game but the original is still considered the definitive release, even normalfags notice how much of the original game's charm has been lost in the remake.
>>12578816All original resident evil are superior to their remakes
>>12578818Read the post I'm replying to, those aren't my opinions
>>12578457OoT 3D
Mogs the original game in pretty much every aspect. The only advantage the original has is you get to see Hitler's head explode in 8 bits.
>>12578457>pic not related
>Oh another remake thread where someone is going to insist "ReSiDeNt eViL rEmAkE iS tHe OnLy GoOd ReMaKe">Better load up my Bionic Commando Rearmed image like I always do>Someone else finally beat me to itWhat the fuck
>>12578457Star Ocean 1.
>>12578457The problem is 99% of remakes don't actually re-make the original game, they just reimagine it with totally different levels, power ups, mechanics, etc. I could probably count the total number of actual remakes in existence on one hand.

>>12579209torn on this one because I love that is uses star ocean 2s engine for combat and skill system BUT the graphics are really soulless and generic compared to SNES which is one of the best looking 16 bit games ever made.to answer OP's question, dragon quest 3 expands and perfects the original game with only a couple minor balance drawbacks (that you can easily restrict yourself from if you care that much) and gives it in amazing coat of paint and orgasmic OST on top of that, its my favorite remake ever and also my favorite game in the entire series.
>>12579235shouldve clarified I meant SNES dq3. though the gbc one is great too, especially for a handheld. the mobile and hd2d slops can suck a dick however, completely pointless efforts since it already had a perfect remake.
>>12579236>completely pointless effortsdamn I thought the same thing about DQ3 SFC, who the fuck would spend money on a game they already own vs playing something new, what a waste of time.
>>12579217Name them
>>12578463Powered Up is cool but it is more of a sidemake than a remake.
I think the best remakes are the ones where you get a choice between a port of the original and a 'done up' one for lack of a better word - Like Wonder Boy III The Dragons Trap, but that's just me.
>>12578457What's with the pixelation and color banding in the PRS screenshot?
>>12578541Agreed. Powered Up is fucking shit. It has good production values but plays like ass.
EE is still fantastic but this is very good
>>12578457No. Interesting reimaginings that stand on their own merit and are good such as the examples given here >>12578463 but never ever an "improvement." Not once.
>>12578457>improvement(you)
This thread was made just yesterday with a different picture but deleted
>>12579217>reimagineThat's what every competent remake does.
>>12578463You mean RE1HD.. right, anon?
>>12579426Holy shit I just realized my brain imagined that a 2020's-era RE1 remake existed. That's how much I've come to accept the demise of all my favorite series.
>>12579293one of the few remakes that was a passion project rather than a cash in desu
>>12578839And the Game Boy game took the NES one and turned it into anime.
>>12579426shitty hardcore version of the game that nukes art direction and level design so hard as a first time player i didn't even manage to find the first map and then got buried under the key bloat. Prob fine for a vet, a terrible first time experience with original somehow holding up better through sheer game design and difficulty curve
>>12579529>nukes art directionAre you joking? The game is fucking beautiful and atmospheric as fuck, it's one of the only real examples of a remaster being an actual improvement on the original vision. And I say this while being another typical nostalgiafag myself.
>>12578457The M2 Castlevania remakes
>>12578590this
>>12578457Certainly not that one. Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series fucking blows.
>>12578457Ninja Warriors
>>12578730>SF64 isn't a remake of SFIt literally is level for level
