I guess Donkey Kong Jr. was kind of a flop in the arcades since Nintendo mostly erased it from their canon afterward. At least the NES port fit all four stages when they supposedly couldn't do it on DK in the same ROM size.

Donkey Kong Junior is a top 20 NES game to me, unironically. It’s got soul and it plays good

It wasn't as big of a hit as Donkey Kong but it was still a popular game in the arcade. Perhaps the most popular Arcade sequel that exists.Donkey Kong 3 on the other hand was not successful at all.After Super Mario became a thing, they just didn't know what to do with DK and DKjr, but they are hardly from erased, in fact not only did all 3 arcade games get ported to NES, but they released a compilation of the DK&DKjr for it later down the line and also made DKjr Math.
