I guess Donkey Kong Jr. was kind of a flop in the arcades since Nintendo mostly erased it from their canon afterward. At least the NES port fit all four stages when they supposedly couldn't do it on DK in the same ROM size.

apparently the Famicom version has a kill screen when you reach level 134 but i assume this was fixed in the NES release

>Nintendo mostly erased it from their canon
It estabilished Jr. (DK) as the hero rather than the villain and paved the way for DKC and the rest of the franchise.

didn't Rare kind of try to pretend the MC in DKC is actually Donkey Kong Jr?
>>
>>12580715
Yeah, and Cranky Kong is supposed to be the original DK kek. Mario in dkc's universe should look like a man in his 50's with that logic. unless Jumpan is actually a separate character.

This poster likely doesn't exist outside anon's schizo delusions.

it seemed apparent to me that they did a sloppy job of porting DK and the code was probably not very well optimized but Nintendo didn't want to admit it

saw Famidaily's review of DK Jr. and he mostly just complained about the game mechanics, which is something i'd never really even thought about. guess he did have to fill 8 minutes of video and it's not like there's all that much else to talk about in a 1983 release that has about 10 minutes of gameplay in it

hi auster
>>
>>12580712
There was no separate NES version, the rom is identical in all regions.
>>
>>12580739
I don't know who Famidaily is, but he sounds like an irrelevant retard. DKJr is great.
>>
>>12580836
are you sure? Donkey Kong was definitely a little different on the NES release, they fixed some bugs and tightened up a few code routines to run faster.
>>
Donkey Kong Junior is a top 20 NES game to me, unironically. It’s got soul and it plays good

https://tcrf.net/Donkey_Kong_Jr._(NES,_Famicom_Disk_System)

The initial 1983 release of DKJr in the pulse line cartridge did have some differences, the NES version is identical to the rev 1 Famicom version.
>>
>>12580712
TCRF doesn't mention that, but it was probably corrected in the revision 1 release. Nintendo's q/c rules were supposed to not allow kill screens.
>>
>>12581001
it's fun for the 8-10 minutes it takes to clear all four screens
>>
It wasn't as big of a hit as Donkey Kong but it was still a popular game in the arcade. Perhaps the most popular Arcade sequel that exists.
Donkey Kong 3 on the other hand was not successful at all.
After Super Mario became a thing, they just didn't know what to do with DK and DKjr, but they are hardly from erased, in fact not only did all 3 arcade games get ported to NES, but they released a compilation of the DK&DKjr for it later down the line and also made DKjr Math.
