>thousands of great games released over its lifespan
>people only talk about the hardware whenever C64 is brought up here
How come?

All the great games for it are NTSC titles from Microprose, LucasArts, etc. Euroslop like Turrican doesn't matter. That said like most computer games of the period they can be rather unintuitive and hard to play.

It falls into the pre-NES bucket so a lot of people overlook it

Gates of the Ancient is really cool. It's like Elite, but frankly, a 10x better game. I see a hint of Star Raiders in there too. It's not the first game that does real-time filled polygons on a C-64 but that shit never stops being impressive to me. The only thing I dislike about it is that there's no real save / load feature, just a password-based thingy that lets you keep some of your equipment for the next run (it's a roguelite) And a single run takes far too long for one sitting IMO. This wouldn't be a problem if you play on an emulator, but on a real machine... well, if you have an entire day with nothing else to do there's worse ways to spend it. Come to think of it, an Action Replay module could also solve the save issue.

the constant slow disk access and disk swapping is probably the most irritating thing about C64 games especially when you're playing the larger adventure, RPG, etc stuff
>>
>>12582342
1999 actually
>>

Which post mid-90s C-64 games do you play?

Any worthwhile C64 game has a better Amiga or DOS port.
>>
>>12582359
It has the best Bruce Lee port.
>>
>>12582359
There are many examples where the Amiga version is inferior to the C64 game. DOS at that time was CGA or EGA vomit with PC speaker bleeps and bloops as Tallarico would put it.

Anyone ever play Saliva Kid? You play as eurojank sonic that spits at things

>>12582359
Wrong and also most any c64 game ported to NES was brutally mogged by the c64 version. Some of the homebrew arcade conversions and improvement hacks for the c64 last few years have also been fucking awesome.
>>
>>12582557
I'm not going to argue for the NES port of Boulder Dash anyway. Nuts to that one.
>>
The C64 sucked compared to the NES. The Atari computers were better too.
>>
>>12582725
If they were better why did the c64 obliterate the Atari computer in units sold?
>>
>>12582815
Atari lost their distribution network in 1983-84.

Just because it's better doesn't mean it will be successful

because most of those games are glorified demoscene showcases
they look impressive (for the time) but often play like absolute ass

I've been playing The Castles of Dr Creep lately and it still holds up really well. Almost like an early precursor to Chip's Challenge. Some levels have way too much back tracking though.

Sounds great. I've always been interested in games that use procedural generation on the C64, so I will need to check this one out.
In my search for Rogue clones I've discovered Katabatia. Much like Gates of the Ancient it's also a homebrew with procedural generation. You have 3 classes to choose from, you pick a God to worship which you can gain favors with by dropping gold in altars found within the dungeon. There are also 4 different shops you can visit. Game will generate different dungeon layouts depending on the character name typed at the start. If you continue using the same name you will always have the same layout. You have the option to play using joystick or keyboard and the former works surprisingly well and is really convenient. There's also an option to change the display to text mode, among other things.
I've played through a few C64 homebrew clones and this one definitely has the most mechanic-heavy gameplay.
