another Euroslop platformer featuring...you guessed it, collecting tokens to complete levels
>>
>>12582620
Why did they jerk off to collectathons so much? I don't get it at all.
>>
>>12582631
easy to program
>>
Beep Boop
>>
>>12582631
As he said, easy to program. Euro guys were mostly amateurs not working for a large company like Konami. Making interesting enemies and obstacles is tough and a lot of work.
>>
>>12582642
You're slowly losing it, Australia -kun.
>>
>>12582620
>>12582631
what's wrong with collectathons? isn't banjo-kazooie a collectathon?
>>
>>12582620
This game is so painfully mediocre and it was also based on the second worst Spielberg ever.
>>
>>12582678
*Spielberg movie ever, sorry
>>
>>12582620
The SNES game is handled by a Japanese company and is actually pretty good go figure.
>>
>>12582695
>developed by...Ukiyotei?
Who?
>>
>>12582698
A TOSE-tier contract developer. They were just new at the time and Hook was one of their first projects.

It's not bad. Too bad about the NES Hook, but it was probably unavoidable since Japanese devs who were still doing NES development by this point were getting a bit scarce so they had no choice but to outsource it to Ocean.
>>
>>12582718
bit of a shame this one is SlowROM but that's what FastROM patches are for
>>
>>12582620
Well as long as you're superior to yet another old thing, that's what counts.
>>
so what it’s still a decent platformer, not as good as the snes version of course

Collectathons are bad design! Unless they're on N64 then it's maximum soul and nostalgia!!!
>>
>>12582678
And which one is the worst?
>>
>>12583713
That anon didn't imply that it was bad design in either case.
>>
>>12583714
nta but pretty sure he means that one Spielberg flick that triggers /pol/

Yeah those videos explaining the brilliance of SMB 1-1 and the intro stage to MMX might seem quaint now but if you've played enough euro platformers it really does give you an appreciation for Japanese level design. Euro platformer levels feel like the things I was making in MSpaint in middle school.
>>
>>12584158
stuff like I-frames and the MC being able to move a few steps before the screen starts scrolling were concepts that totally eluded these guys
>>
>>12584158
>those videos explaining the brilliance of SMB 1-1 and the intro stage to MMX
>>game forces the player to learn its mechanics organically in the first level
>>OMG THIS IS FUCKING BRILLIANT DID YOU NOTICE HOW THEY TEACH THE PLAYER STUFF WITHOUT HAVING TO RESORT TO STOPPING THE GAMEPLAY AND USE TEXT EXPLANATIONS!!!! THIS IS LIKE WOW, SO GOOD!!

What's amazing is the fact that modern gamers are amazed by this because all they've known is modern gaming shit.
>>
>>12584158
In such fairness SMB was not even typical of the average early period Famicom game and many of them were not fun to play at all
>>
>>12582620
At least it's not that horrid like the other Peter Pan game.
>>
Where did europ hurt you anon?
>>
12584232
what a completely pointless thread bump
