Why didn’t they invent the FPS first considering they were tech wizards?

Their country has an aversion to guns for some reason, so of course it would be Americans who would invent that genre of gaming.

because Maze War came out in 1974 when nobody at home owned a computer.

There was a bunch of first-person games in the 80's. Elite 1984. 3D Lunattack 1984. Starglider 1986. People often overlook first-person games before Wolfenstein 3D, but they clearly exist. The academic approach to video game history is to say that Maze War and other school computer experiments were the first FPS games, but really these games were not publicly distributed or played by a mainstream audience. The mainstream arrival of FPS happened because of Battlezone 1980, primarily. That was an American arcade game that commercially sold well and spawned clones, like 1983's Robot Tank. There's also other arcade games like Atari's Star Wars in 1983, which isn't an "FPS" but it's rail shooting from a first-person, no doubt something that designers noticed. It's essentially in the territory of alternate history fiction to speculate how fast FPS would've been created if you pretend Battlezone and Maze War don't exist, but a lot of the famous home 3D 80s games were European.

they still revolutionised the genre with Goldeneye 007

Early FPS were just dungeon crawlers + guns.

Only the US and Japan (US colony) had the soul to invent vidya genres. Now things have evened out globally.

It’s a well-established fact that after WW2 Europeans devolved into clueless neutered domesticated cucks dependent on the US for practically all aspects of technology, culture, and defense that keep them pacified in their fake welfare state bubble / decaying theme park continent

that's proto-Twisted Metal.

StarGlider was more impressive than early FPS though.

This was like 20 years after Battlezone.
It didn't "invent" anything other than maybe overpriced one trick pony controllers that could be used to play one game only.
>>
Also Virtual-On would be closer to Battlezone. It had basically the same control scheme.
