I just left the Dharma Temple and I believe I ran out of random encounters to mature my classes. I am currently stuck in the fight where you have to fight 4 guys outside of the temple. Right now I am at the casino buying Tights to sell for better equipment to see if that helps.

I just can't get into dragon quest games that have predefined characters for your party instead of just building your own.

8 is better balanced, 7 has a shit ton of useless skills, redundant skills and a few OP one you can spam; plus you spend the first 30 hours with the same three skills and no real progression.
Each town is more unique and detailed, while the towns in 7 are basically on the same level as NES DQ towns design wise. It also has a much more fun overworld to explore and your comparison is biased towards 7 and forgets to mention things 8 has and 7 doesn't like the monster collecting, summoning and arena; and DQ was never liked or remembered for its puzzles.

DQ8 is a much slower game than DQ7,the game is full 3D open world so everything take much more time, traveling between locations take a lot of time ,finding the chest in the open world take forever and the battles themselves are much longer

It straight up cuts a good chunk of content out, there's no party chats and lacks a good amount of enemies. IIRC, it straight up cuts out chunks of the story as well.

If you want to play DQ7, either play the PSX original or the 3DS remake. The 3DS remake is my goto since it is an actual remake that only really streamlines the beginning but otherwise keeps the same template with better graphics and seeing the cute outfits on Maribel is nice.

The modern remake is pretty mediocre but the 3DS one rivals the original in quality with the same amount of soul and attention to detail.

if you're like me and play jrpgs for the story and characters you're gonna have a bad time after the first 8 hours or so. Maybe I'm just too FF brained but literally nothing happening after 50 hours besides the simp ditching you and finding an old guy made me drop the game. One day I'll give it another go and see it all the way through, maybe on 3ds next time. That one episode with the robot caring for it's long dead master was a hit right in the feels but I couldn't give a shit less about most of these random towns problems. Yeah other DQ games do this a lot too but I feel like there's still an overarching narrative pulling you forward, but in VII "random town filler episode" IS the game.

Played the 3ds remake back in the day (yes yes I know), It feels like playing an episodic anime, nice but only a few of the islands are really memorable.

The "episodic anime" critique make no sense when you're a fan of Dragon quest

Up until the Abbey, sure, but once past that, it shifts to they usual Dragon Quest narrative of the party being chosen ones sent to fix the problems the big bad caused and ultimately slay him.

yeah but the soundtrack is great, it streamlines the class system a bit and balances and tunes the combat a little too

it's loads better than the original. though the original opening, which is true ludokino, got cut a little.

I started with the 3DS version, but after playing the original, I find myself preferring that more. My only annoyance with it is how the English font they used is too big and it makes a lot of messy abbreviations. No idea why they couldn't just use something like the NES games had.

There are more puzzles and running back and forth talking to people in different locations on the starting island in the original version. They also cut a couple puzzles from late game dungeons in the 3DS as well. But apart from that the 3DS version is the same (barring changes to gameplay).
